After 16 years, the online-only publication Artnet Magazine will close today, reports Art in America. Sites in Germany, France and the United States will all cease publication and their three full-time editorial staff members, Walter Robinson, Rachel Corbett, and Emily Nathan, will leave the company. Robinson indicated in a note sent to Art Fag City that all of artnet’s editorial staff are seeking work.

Who’s Going to DC’s (e)merge Art Fair Tomorrow?

I’m in DC for the week, so in addition to visiting some of the nations greatest treasures, I’ll be attending the (e)merge art fair tonight and tomorrow (the event runs through Sunday September 25th). Every fair has a concept that defines its character, whether it be new art dealers, collective exhibition strategies, or whatever it is the Armory touts, and this one is no different. According to their website, “(e)merge combines an exhibition platform for galleries and nonprofits with that for vetted projects by unrepresented artists.” We’ll see how the unrepresented artist idea turns out, it could go either way.

I’ve spent the last two years listening to my father (and accountant) tell me I needed to “diversify my revenue sources”. That’s always sounded a little too close to “get another job” for my liking, but in truth that’s what I’ve been doing for the last two years. I write the same amount, but I speak at more schools, I run more fundraisers, and sell more advertising than I have before.

This all came up when I spoke to Ania Szremski at Fmagazine this month, a writer who wants to know what publishing models could be reproduced in Chicago. I don’t recommend anyone try to do what I do — it isn’t easy financially, and the work load can be intense — but according the article only Bad at Sports is so foolish anyway.
