Gretchen Bender once said that artists are depicting a society already living outside its own reality. Martha Schwendener, The New York Times reviewer writing glowingly about her show at the The Kitchen, notes this while explaining that the aesthetic of Bender’s installations and videos create a bridge between an undead past and an uncertain future. A Day for Detroit in Review

We owe it to Tyler Green of Modern Art Notes for spearheading “A Day for Detroit” and provoking a veritable downpour of tweets and blog posts. Green urged fellow art bloggers to post their favorite works from the Detroit Institute of Arts and tweet with the hashtage #DayDetroit to raise awareness for the museum’s collection. Given the volume of activity, we spent the better part of our day summarizing what happened.

Monday Links: Buried Money Edition

The Dia Foundation’s original founders Heiner Friedrich, Fariha de Menil Friedrich and Helen Winkler submit their scathing disapproval of Dia director Philippe Vergne’s plan to deaccession a large chunk of works– an auction of Twomblys, Chamberlains, and Newmans which would raise $20 million for its acquisitions budget. They deem the plan “a complete betrayal of trust toward some of the great artists of the twentieth century.” [MAN] Paul Winkler has expressed similar disgust.
There’s always someone willing to oppose investment in art museums. In Hong Kong, Christopher Chung Shu-kun, a lawmaker from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong party, says he will oppose any calls for further funding sought by the West Kowloon Cultural District authority. That’s HK$25bn ($3.2bn) in additional funding he wants to block. He believes the money they originally received was not spent wisely. [The Art Newspaper]
A 260-plus page interview with Henri Matisse will be published more than 70 years after he initially blocked its publication. He was upset that the interview was reduced in size. [The Guardian]
Madison Square Park Conservancy has hired Brooke Kamin Rapaport as their Senior Curator. She’ll be organizing the schedule of four annual sculpture shows, overseeing publications, etc. [AFC Inbox]
Weird. For those of you who find the sound of Roomba calming there’s now a Robot Vacuum Simulator 2013. Have fun relaxing. [Animal]
In case you missed it last week, federally-contracted Smithsonian workers protested for a living wage. The Smithsonian responded with a red herring debate about the technical definition of the word “strike.” [Hyperallergic]
Maybe video artists could take a nod from Audiam, a YouTube “treasure chest” for musicians. [Verge]
So far, the new art podcast A Cups, by artists Angela Washko and Ann Hirsch, sounds promising, with artists Nate Hill and Nathaniel Sullivan and journalist Rachel Rabbit White. Tune in tonight at 9:15 to hear artist Carla Gannis live. [A Cups]

Here’s a backwards article: Artists get more money from kickstarter than from the N.E.A., and writer Katherine Boyle writes that she isn’t surprised, because private philanthropy outpaces government support. Kickstarter campaigns aren’t philanthropy though, they’re crowdsourced funding used to support the production of products. That’s different than supporting an intangible cultural good. Anatoly Iksanov, director of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, was fired after a man threw acid in the art director’s face. A dancer said “that the theater has plunged into crime and violence under Iksanov’s watch.” [Huffington Post]
Well, this is too bad. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago has cut short a ten-week private home tour of London-based artist Amalia Pica’s small granite sculpture on July 1. It’s assumed the piece was damaged in transit, but no details have been given. [Chicago Magazine]
The Do It interactive show at Manchester Gallery features work from Louise Bourgeois, Ai Wei Wei, Gibert & George, and Yoko Ono, among others, that tells you what to do. Most edicts are relatively frivolous, nothing despotic [The Guardian]

A record rainfall has left Toronto streets flooded. Their subway, which was shut down yesterday due to the rain, has started running again, but the city has yet to fully recover with many roads still blocked. Monday Links: I Can Manipulate That Universe Just By Flushing

Comedian Louis C.K. was doing his bit in the 90’s to keep art stereotypes alive. Here he is, playing a swirling-paint-in-toilet-bowl-photographer, addressing his critics and stating his goals. [Gizmodo]
Big news this weekend: the United States government is spying on everyone, and social media companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook are providing the bulk of the information. Whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked a bevy of National Security Agency (NSA) documents to The Guardian, who interviewed him while he’s holed up in a Hong Kong hotel. Gawker has a great guide to knowing the extent of what was leaked, and uncloaking the legalese of Facebook’s response. [The Guardian, Gawker]
Here’s a dose of future shock: Cisco and iRobot have developed a 5’5” robot with a video conferencing monitor in place of a head. At a $70,000 price tag, it’s being developed for companies with employees who work from home. Not only will this make working from home less fun, it means you’ll never be alone again. [TechCrunch]
A message from Michigan State House of Representatives: We’d like to make sure that a law is passed that will keep the city of Detroit from selling off the museum’s assets, but first things first. Vacation ‘til the fall! [Hyperallergic]

The Hirshhorn’s plans to construct an architectural bubble have been scrapped, but that won’t stop the museum’s resigning director Richard Koshalek from keeping his dream alive. The Los Angeles Times reports that Koshalek wants to move back to California at the end of the year, and hopes to shop around a version of the “tech tent” bubble to an institution out there. The Whitney just restored Douglas Davis’ The World’s First Collaborative Sentence (1995), the museum’s first digital acquisition. Nobody’s really sure of the best way to restore online works, the Whitney included. The article indulges in some unfortunate generalizations—art is no longer discovered in biennials and fairs and magazines, but on the phone—being high up there for me, but it’s worth a look regardless. Friday Links: Frothy Word Salads

Stop making fun of China’s knockoff architecture. [The Atlantic Cities]
“The contemporary art market is far ahead of the stock market at least in terms of its frothiness, but, I’m starting to see music sheets on how cheap equities remain based on a traditional, but academic yardstick like the risk premium,” writes Martin Sosnoff. So much of this sentence doesn’t make sense—what is frothiness? There are two more pages where that comes from. [Forbes]
In the latest issue of e-flux, Martha Rosler takes on Artspeak. This “gobbledygook”, like Triple Canopy’s popular International Art English spoof from 2012, is a joke, but, for Rosler, that’s not a reason to give it the brush off: “jokes are often a cover for hostility, and the more elaborate the joke, the more powerful the hostility may be”. Also to look forward to, plenty of of piquant, Rosler-esque anecdotes ranging from restaurant menus to Gullivers’ travels, all in order to get to the sham of our current word salad. [e-flux]
The Indianapolis Museum of Art wins a major award from the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and with it, a rebuke. Tyler Green has a great report on how the AIC’s award is meant to pressure IMA President Charles Venable into re-evaluating the targets of his cuts. [Modern Art Notes]
The Hirshhorn’s Director Richard Koshalek resigns amidst allegations that the board was not wholly supportive of his vision. That vision spans the range of museum expansion, from “bubble” architecture by the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, to large-scale projects, like a new education center and Richard Serra installation. According to City Paper’s Kriston Capps, the museum board will determine the bubble’s fate later this month while Koshalek will serve out his term through the end of the year. (Personally, we’d like to see a naming contest of the bubble before the project gets scrapped.) [City Paper]
