This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Skip Most Fairs, See The Real Hennessy Youngman

Plan comfortable shoes for the week: it’s another inundation of art fairs and satellite events.

Thankfully, Frieze and SPRING/BREAK’s new Brooklyn offshoot are the only big fairs we’re recommending by now, so fair fatigue shouldn’t be too much of a problem. But of course, the city is packed with art star openings, book launches, and more brunches than you can shake a croissant at. We’ve done you the favor of skimming only the best of the best events this week though, to save you from too much overload.

Highlights include Roxy Paine’s creepy interiors at Paul Kasmin Tuesday night, Martin Roth’s Twitter-fed lavender farm at the Austrian Cultural Forum on Wednesday, and Jon Rafman’s screening and book launch at Printed Matter on Thursday. If you’re not fair-pooped after Friday, check out Salon 94’s demon-wrestling solo show from Jayson Musson (of “Hennessy Youngman” fame) on Saturday and Columbia MFA candidates paying tribute to Walter Benjamin at the Jewish Museum on Sunday.

The Best of Everything, 2016

We were pretty sure 2016 was a stinker until we sat down to reflect on all that was good. Going through the images on our phones and our archives, we learned there’s actually quite a bit to celebrate. So much so, in fact, it took us an entire week to assemble this post. That’s quite a bit of time, but it was worth every minute. Here’s to all the artists, curators and performers that made our days and lives better this year.

I Went To The Jewish Museum’s “Take Me (I’m Yours)” And All I Got Was This Stupid T-Shirt

A loud, tacky sign emblazoned with “Everything Must Go” would not feel out of place in the Jewish Museum’s current exhibition Take Me (I’m Yours). A rack of plastic goodie bags branded with the exhibition’s title hang in the show’s entrance, encouraging viewers to fill up on artist-made pins, T-shirts, used clothing, candy and a 25-cent ball of air from Yoko Ono. With this free-for-all curatorial style, the exhibit looks more like a display of samples than a contemporary art show.

That’s a bad thing. The whole show feels like a gimmick designed to lure people in the door by offering them free swag. Meanwhile, the Museum is presenting the idea that they are challenging the traditional relationship between art and its viewers, which not only isn’t true (it’s been done to death), it distracts from the sociopolitical critiques made by many of the artists in the show. Simply put, the show is a disaster.

Looks like someone gave The Jewish Museum keys to a time machine. Come this winter, the museum’s public programs will include speakers such as the very dead Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, and Albert Einstein.

Now’s the time to brush up on your activism skills. This week, we’re planning a protest with the world’s leading Putin critic, and then taking squatting advice from experienced artists. It’s also a good season to head outdoors. The so-called best Puerto Rican art and culture festival comes to New York, and will mural paint all over El Barrio and the Bronx. Renowned culture critics and artists will shine their wisdom. And on Saturday, we’re hoping for one of the last best PS1 warm ups of the season.

John Baldessari and R.H. Quaytman on Jack Goldstein: “Nobody Knew Who He Was”

Every once in a while an artist’s talk comes along that’s as spirited as a wild dinner party. The conversation’s good, if a little off track, but mostly, it’s the company that makes the evening worthwhile. That pretty much sums up what happened Tuesday night at the Jewish Museum’s “Dialogue and Discourse: How Is Jack Goldstein?”, a roundtable held in conjunction with the Jewish Museum’s current exhibition Jack Goldstein x 10,0000.
