Frieze New York: Either Way, We’re Drinking Champagne

“Greetings from Captain John. There will be no swimming and no diving.” Sailing on the Frieze ferry to Randall’s Island, the driver told us that we were on our way to vacation, but cautioned against letting loose with freewheeling abandon. Once we landed, that ethos seemed to be in effect at the fair itself: dealers and collectors were having fun, and the fair was certainly crowded, but nobody was breaking out champagne in the early afternoon over skyrocketing sales.

Moving Image, A Fair With Purpose

Slowly but surely, galleries are reaching a breaking point with the art fair circuit. Escape isn’t an option for most galleries. Instead of opting out, we’re seeing a rise in specialized fairs, those that provide an alternative to the white-walled booth model. Moving Image is one of those fairs, and it has all the makings of a solid future.

An air of something clung to the walls of The Armory Show yesterday afternoon. Sales were uneven, but steady, and the crowds pretty much identical to last year. The mechanics of the fair seemed to be working fine.

Even though the hum around Armory week seems subdued this year, visiting half-a-dozen-plus art fairs can in a few days’ time can feel like a week on a Eurail pass. Naive outsiders are treated harshly, the food is unfamiliar and overpriced, and you spend a lot of time snooping around taking pictures. It’s useful to have an index that you can depend on to guide you towards the things that are worth seeing and away from the things that aren’t. A guidebook if you will. Here’s ours.

President’s Day Links: Famous People Edition

Making the rounds this week: The Wall Street Journal’s profile of Venice Biennale curator Massimiliano Gioni. “Lately,” he says, “people just think that contemporary art is something there to pass the time of the wealthy, or because everybody else is doing it or because openings are cool and fashionable.” Gioni, by contrast, sees art not as the exclusive domain of the hip and the well-to-do, but as a kind of mental playground for the masses.
“We need to remind ourselves that contemporary art is first of all a form of conceptual gymnastics, in which we learn to coexist with what we don’t understand,” he says.That’s some Gioni gloss on an actual problem, though, to be fair, there is some truth to what he says about coexisting in the context of class. The middle class isn’t always friendly with those from the upper class and visa versa.

Meanwhile, want to know what drives Gioni? “That’s ultimately my interest,” the curator tells the journal “to get the artwork to tell stories.” [WSJ]
British artist Stuart Semple has signed a contract for worldwide representation with the fashion agency Next Management. Oh goodie; the art world was sufficiently lacking people whose job description is to make demands. Now we have a whole new group of icky people to make the field more annoying. [The Art Newspaper]
Jillian Steinhauer visited the archives of the American Folk Art Museum and got a chance to look at some of Darger’s writing. He wrote a 15,000 page novel. [Hyperallergic]

Horton Gallery Moves Into CANADA’s Former Space

Chelsea-based Horton Gallery will take over CANADA’s old location in Chinatown, the gallery announced today. The gallery will host its inaugural exhibition there in September. The gallery’s new, larger space, located at 55-59 Chrystie Street, has a storied past. Home to CANADA for the past decade, and the Beastie Boys throughout the 1980s, Horton will be filling a space that’s become known for its creative rigor.
