Thursday Links: Goddess Statue Needs Head, Art Dealer Gone Wild

A sign that really rich people are getting richer: the public spaces in their new condos are decorated with art by the latest up and comers. These are the kind of stories that make me want to poke my eyes out. (Who cares if rich people buy things and why do they always have to buy the same things?) [Artsy]
A round-up of the nation’s “best” glamping opportunities. I had no idea Glamping was so expensive. Keep in mind you’re basically sleeping in a tent but one that rents for as much as $1500 a night. In New York, that price comes with an increased chance of getting lyme disease. [Curbed]
The Tate Modern has put together a show of black American art made in 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and it’s now making waves. [Reuters]
Something about this Joel Mesler confessions column reminds me of The Awl’s “The 40-Year Old Reversion” a story about privileged Park Slope mothers who do drugs, drink too much and cheat on their husbands. Mesler is looking back at a life riddled with anxiety, compulsive spending and regular blackout drunk binges, but then, as now, he does so through the lens of an upper middle classer. His problems are and were real, but are also clearly cushioned by cash, and it’s hard not to begrudge that. (It’s worth noting that the Reversion story is infinitely better, because it attempts to get beyond the experience of one person.) [ARTnews]
Amazon has filed a patent for underwater storage and fulfillment facilities. I’m a little skeptical that this plan is anything more than a PR stunt. They claim the facilities would help counteract “inefficient use of space”, because, um, what? It seems like management of an underwater space involves far more logistics in terms of getting stuff in and out of the depot. We’d like a Jeremy Bailey response to this please. [Dezeen]
Google’s doodle today honors Eiko Ishioka, on what would’ve been her birthday. The late Japanese visual artist has won a Grammy and an Oscar in her career as an art director and costume designer. [Al Jazeera]
Las Vegas is still waiting for its much-delayed art museum. In the meantime, galleries have taken to staging large-scale exhibitions as pop-ups in warehouse spaces. Now, the team behind the city’s forthcoming Art Museum at Symphony Park are trying to make some permanent gallery spaces out of old warehouses. [Las Vegas Weekly].
As galleries continue to drop like flies in New York and London, gallerists are looking to alternate models. Some are doing nomadic programming in other galleries and splitting costs/proceeds, some are doing pop-ups, online businesses, house shows, and even using a boat as an exhibition space. Someone beheaded a statue of the Hawaiian sea goddess on the grounds of the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo. The sculpture by Fred Soriano is valued at $15,000 and the artist says it can be restored if the head is recovered from the thieves. [Ledger Enquirer]

We can’t even keep up with all the Schutz controversy. A fake letter by Schutz saying piece should be taken down was circulated and then debunked. Now there are complaints that Hannah Black, the artist who wrote the letter demanding that the painting be removed and destroyed, isn’t black enough to have signed the protest letter, in which she removed the white signatures after critique, (thanks Facebook). A must-read: the full text of Lionel Shriver’s talk about identity politics that ignited a firestorm of controversy at the Brisbane Writers Festival. It’s worth reading in its entirety, because the most cringe-worthy “can she say that?” moments are offset by smart observations on the nature of “identity”, empathy, outrage culture, and how we challenge ourselves as artists. Finally, some good news from the MTA: bar cars are coming back to the Metro North New Haven Line. This might make life a little more more bearable for all the art world people who commute back-and-forth to/from Yale. [WTNH]

Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin’s foundation has donated more than 250 pieces of Russian artwork to the Centre Pompidou. Much of the collection is from the 1970s, when the Soviet version of Pop Art, “Sots Art”, emerged. [Washington Post]

“Not only is Murry an artist who enters the contest annually, but in the film she’s featured alongside her blind, beret-wearing, long-haired dachshund, Hallie, also a painter. ‘I thought I had a pretty good year last year with my art,” Murry says in the film, “but my blind dog sold more art than I did.’” This review of the documentary “Million Dollar Duck,” about “the Super Bowl of Wildlife Art” is one of the weirdest things to read today. The Landmarks Preservation Commission is finally considering the creation of a Morningside Heights historic district. The best part of this idea is that it would mainly protect residential structures, which will hopefully preserve some relatively affordable Manhattan housing stock. [Curbed]

Last week, residents of glass luxury apartment towers overlooking the Tate Modern complained that museum goers are using the observation deck on the Tate’s new expansion to spy on them. First of all, is this really a problem? Secondly, did people not understand the concept of two-way transparency when they opted to spend ungodly amounts of money to live in apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows in the middle of London? TripAdvisor has named the Metropolitan Museum of Art the world’s top museum. Apparently they weren’t too concerned about that logo change. [artnet News]

Did Edgar Degas make a plaster cast of “Little Dancer,” discovered in 2004? Art historian, Gregory Hedberg says yes, Arthur Beale, the retired chairman of the department of conservation and collections management at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, says no. But now Beale has decided he thinks the piece is authentic and will give a talk on why at the Alliance Française this Thursday. [The New York Times]

Thursday Links: MICA to Replace Historic Buildings With Condo-Lookalike

MICA is demolishing the 1914 buildings that house the school’s Printmaking department and replacing them with this ugly, out-of-scale thing from GWWO Architects. It’s not surprising they opted to render it at night.

Mikolai Napieralski—a former employee of the Qatari National Museum—provides a surreal behind-the-scenes account of the tiny nation’s rise and fall in the art world. Qatar’s former Emir and his daughter Sheikha Mayassa went on an ambitious spending spree to bring Western art professionals, museum outposts, and crazily expensive exhibitions to Doha. All of this was made possible by oil wealth and underpaid foreign labor. Now, that money is gone, and there’s a new Emir on the throne. [Quartz]

With the re-opening of SFMOMA, now the country’s largest modern and contemporary art museum, and a small but loyal collector base, is San Francisco poised to be a major art capital? The article briefly touches on one obstacle: international blue chip galleries are opening branches, but the city is just too expensive for artists and artist-run spaces. [W Magazine]

Painter Timothy Desmond is suing the state of California over its ban of selling or displaying images of the Confederate flag. Italy’s horrible earthquake has destroyed countless historic sites, artworks, and ancient buildings. This is pretty much almost too depressing to read. [The Guardian]

Artist and Bad at Sports contributor Amanda Browder has been wrapping old buildings in Buffalo with fabric as part of a public art initiative led by The Albright Knox. The piece is called “Spectral Locus” and is intended to create a sense of connection amongst viewers. [WGRZ]

Times Square Arts has unveiled a new installation from German artist and architect J. Mayer H that pays homage to the hyper-gentrified zone’s sexier pre-Giuliani era. Titled “XXX Times Square With Love,” the piece comprises a series of recliners in the shape of Xs, which is a fitting commentary on the area’s transformation from porno mecca to sunbathing tourist trap. This interview between multispecies ethnographer Eben Kriksey and artist Katherine Behar is nuts. They discuss Behar’s show, which includes a performance by two Roombas, and the questions look like this: The Roomba really isn’t a species as such. A Roomba can’t fuck another Roomba and make baby Roombas. In that way a plant is different from a Roomba? [Bad at Sports]

The Tate Modern is hiring assistant curators, at about half of the average London salary. The positions pay less than the museum’s cafe pays chefs. [Hyperallergic]

The impending shutdown of the L train, the oncoming development of the Cornell Tech Campus on Roosevelt Island, and the proposed Midtown East rezoning set to affect Manhattan stations along the 7 line is leading some to speculate that property further into Queens will increase in value. Speaking of Queens, the feud between Queens City Councilman Jimmy Van Bremar and Mayor Bill de Blasio continues. Five days after de Blasio told reporters he was going to reach out to Van Bremar and give him a stern talking to about affordable housing, he still hasn’t done reached out. Van Bremar is pissed. And rightly so. The councilman has has said will not approve a building of affordable housing units until the developer gets its act together and makes the repairs on the building it runs across the street. He has also said that these units are not actually affordable. Finally, a councilman willing to say what everyone knows—the affordable housing plan is media plan, not an actual plan. [Politico]

Yesterday, almost immediately after we published a piece in which Whitney Kimball states “I think it’s safe to say by now that plants are no longer a trend; they are a medium (except for potted palms)” the Mexico City art center/residency Casa Maauad posted the above image on Facebook. It’s titled “They are these or they may be others/ ‪#‎PLANTS‬ (2015) Meme digital” from Cristina Garrido, whose exhibition “Un acuerdo tácito” opens there later this month. The plant invasion is real. Even potted palms. [Facebook]

Continuing their “Making it in New York” series, WNYC asks “Are Artists Abandoning NYC?” The answer: yes. And also, no. Plenty of artists are decamping for cheaper places, but the city’s artist population just keeps growing as new waves of debt-saddled art school grads arrive to pay more and more, replacing the disenfranchised who leave. Yesterday, revelations leaked from an investigation into Michael Jackson’s child molestation charges included the discovery of animal sacrifice photos, weird porn, and drugs started trending across social media. At the VIP opening of the new Tate Modern opening, over 150 feminist activists protested the institution’s decision to show work by Carl Andre, chanting “oi Tate, we’ve got a vendetta, where the fuck is Ana Mendieta?”. Organized by the WHEREISANAMENDIETA movement, the protesters are decrying the exhibition of Andre’s work — not to mention the failure to show Mendieta’s work in the same space, even though the Tate has five works in storage — as a glorification of violent men within the art institution. Talk about exploitation: Jenny Lorenzo and Brittany Ashley, both popular producers/personalities for Buzzfeed’s Motion Pictures company, were fired for appearing in “Gente-Fied”, a web series produced by actor America Ferrera. Why? Because Lorenzo and Ashley apparently breached the non-compete clause in their contracts. Even though non-compete agreements are fairly common in tech and engineering jobs, digital media companies like Buzzfeed are now adopting them. It’s a backwards revival of the old Hollywood studio system, back when stars signed ironclad 7-year contracts. [Politico]
Breaking: Bloomberg’s art market reporter Katya Kazakina confirms billionaire Leon Black has won ownership of Picasso’s “Bust of a Woman” plaster sculpture. At the center of an international legal drama between Gagosian and the Qatari royal family, the dispute stemmed from Picasso’s daughter, Maya Widmaeier-Picasso, selling the work not once but twice to both parties. It’s the maddeningly tragic story of Alejandro Nieto, a San Francisco native murdered by police after new tech-industry transplants reported him looking “suspicious” and “foreign” while sitting in the park in his own neighborhood. Unsurprisingly, none of the cops faced criminal charges. It’s appropriately titled “Death by Gentrification”. [The Guardian]

China is in the midst of a private art museum building boom. Unfortunately, this means China gets a lot of starchitect-designed spaces in fringe locations with very little worthwhile art inside. Maybe Art Basel Hong Kong can change that? A theory’s being floated that the market slowdown is misrepresented by crappy auction sales. Wednesday Links: Artworld Overtaken By Dickheads, Mexicans Dodge MFA Debt

The Knoedler forgery trial kicked off this week, and the plaintiffs introduced their first witnesses yesterday, among them curator John Elderfield. The trial will determine whether or not Knoedler’s former president Ann Freedman knowingly sold a Rothko fake to collectors Domenico and Eleanore De Sole. The trial, of course, follows one of the art world’s biggest scandals, when the 165 year old Knoedler abruptly closed in 2011, and it soon emerged they had been selling fakes for the past 15 years. Elderfield testified about two fake Diebenkorns, following the defence’s opening argument about the “highly dysfunctional” AbEx generation of painters and their so-called questionable record keeping of business transactions. Evan Hughes, the son of Sydney gallerist/collector Ray Hughes on closing the gallery to pursue philanthropy and politics: “it was almost as if we were given permission to declare that the art world had been taken over by dickheads. Too much of the commercial art trade has become about the selling of product and the accumulation of capital,” and on his conservative political rival’s commissioned portrait: “Unhappy with the work, Turnbull confronted my father at a function and exclaimed: ‘That artist of yours is no good; he’s made me look like a big, fat, greedy cunt’, to which my father replied, ‘He is a realist painter, you know’.” [The Art Newspaper]

The expansion project will increase the museum’s square footage by 60% in an asymmetrical ziggurat designed by Herzog & de Meuron—arguable the only starchitects with a track record of never disappointing. New York is finally getting a handful of open-gangway subway cars. They greatly reduce overcrowding by creating room for passengers in the otherwise wasted space between cars and facilitating more efficient distribution of crowds. In reality, almost every major city outside the United States uses conjoined trains. If you’ve ever ridden a subway anywhere else in the world, the improvement is obvious.
