Last week, GRIN Gallery in Providence opened the AFC-curated exhibition Geographically Indeterminate Fantasies: The Animated GIF as Place. It’s the IRL version of our online exhibition with Providence College—Galleries and will be installed until July 2nd. GRIN sent us these install shots, and it’s pretty remarkable how different and complimentary the physical show feels to the online component.

In the gallery, we installed GIFs included in the online exhibition from Hugo Moreno, Sara Ludy, Petra Cortright, Dina Kelberman, Ying Miao, Clement Valla, and Gizelle Zatonyl as well as different works from Nicolas Sassoon and Wickerham & Lomax. We also installed two pieces from Victoria Fu: the video projection “Velvet Peel 2” and animated neon sculpture “Pinch-Zoom.” These are all about the way bodies relate to screens and illusionistic space, so Fu was a perfect fit for an IRL exhibition about digital spaces.

We also screened all of the GIFs in the exhibition as well as longer video works from the artists and longer-form GIFs from Jacolby Satterwhite. GRIN (60 Valley Street, Unit 3
Providence, RI) is hosting another outdoor screening on June 25th from 8 – 10 p.m., so if you didn’t catch the opening, be sure to check it out! We have to say, even if we hadn’t curated this show, we’d be giving it a giant neon thumbs-up.

As those subscribed to our mailing list will already know, today Providence College—Galleries launched its inaugural online exhibition “Geographically Indeterminate Fantasies: The Animated GIF as Place”. Curated by the Art F City team. Michael Anthony Farley, Paddy Johnson, and Rea McNarama, the show is the result of six months worth of planning, development and careful consideration. We are extremely proud of it.

Given that the press release has already gone out, we’re using the blog as the publishing platform for our curatorial essay. We hope it will give viewers a window into the sense of wonder we often have looking at these works.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Gallery Armageddon

Those who thought they’d ease into the work week after the holiday break will be sorely disappointed. Nearly every gallery in the city has an opening. Between the Abrons Art Center’s American Realness Festival opening this week and a rash of Chelsea and Lower East Side shows, your calendar will be full. And not just with the usual crap. Painter Jane Corrigan will debut fresh new figurative paintings at Feuer/Mesler—it’s her first solo show in two years. Grids, systems and minimalism take over The Kitchen, Cheim & Read and Lesley Heller, all in unrelated shows. And for those following all the climate change stories, Dana Sherwood’s exhibition at Denny Gallery focuses on our destruction of the earth. Assuming we survive long enough to see the show, it should be illuminating.

It’s raining plastic raindrops. Yes, Miami Art Week is upon us, and you’ve already gotten our take on what’s worth checking out outside the satellites. Traffic is promising to be a real shit show with the Venetian Causeway being closed, a favoured route to the Beach. Even though the city has a free, Basel express bus, getting around will be even more of a hassle. So more than ever, plan ahead, and rely on our curated fair guide. We’re doubtful you’ll be able to do it all, but that’s always the case anyways with Miami—at least you try to do it all. Gold star for effort.

GIF of the Day: And The Award Goes to Wallpapers!

Let’s face it: last week’s GIF Free For All awards were a hot bed of incest, corruption and petty politics. It’s time to set the record straight. The real GIF Awards need to go to Wallpapers. Why? Because these are gifs that can be tiled, and we all know bigger is better.

Wallpapers is a collaborative project founded in 2011 by artists Sara Ludy, Nicolas Sassoon and Sylvain Sailly. Now in its second iteration, Wallpapers has been shown at 319 Scholes in New York (curated by Lindsay Howard), Western Front in Vancouver (curated by Sarah Todd), and PAMI Festival in London (curated by Bubblebyte.org). This latest iteration (the second), will show at the New Forms Festival 12 in Vancouver (curated by Malcolm Levy). Participants include Laura Brothers, Rollin Leonard, Sara Ludy, Lorna Mills, Brenna Murphy, Sylvain Sailly, Nicolas Sassoon, Rick Silva, Krist Wood.

And now to the burning question: Who has made the best GIF? I announce a tie between Sylvain Sailly, Rick Silva and Laura Brothers! These GIFs couldn’t look more different from each other, but they both possess the same quality: Graphic appeal. As a viewer, you want to see the loop completed. There may be no better marker of a good GIF.
