Monday Links: New Trend Piece Discovers 30 Year Old Art Trend

Lisa Cooley Gallery, one of the most influential scene-makers of the Lower East Side, is closing its brick-and-mortar location on Norfolk Street. Cooley declined to comment on why the gallery closed, but in her email announcing the gallery’s closure she wrote, “Although this chapter is ending, another one is right around the corner—more sustainable, more rewarding, and more interesting. In my mind, this change will continue and extend the direction of the recent gallery program. Stay tuned. I hope to show that growth can be about ideas, not just about scale, and I look forward to seeing everyone in person soon. Lastly, consider taking a break from art and donating to one of these organizations:Food Bank of New York, Planned Parenthood, Children’s Defense Fund”. She sounds disillusioned, as anyone working in this field should be. [ARTnews]

Vogue has identified the hot new trend in the art world: small-scale, intimate paintings supplanting large-scale installations. Except, A: installation art is just as popular as ever, B: all of the work they highlight is of a vein people have been mining since the 80s, and C: none of it is particularly “small.” Essentially, this is just a list of painters in their 20s and 30s who are cool. Theo Ponchaveli has painted a mural of Lee Harvey Oswald on the side of a barbershop in Oswald’s former Dallas neighborhood, now an arts district. Some neighbors are predictably unhappy about the associating the assassin with the area. [Dallas News]

Wednesday Links: I Always Feel Like Somebody’s Watching Me

Mysteriously legible graffiti appeared on an abandoned hospital facing a luxury condo tower in Miami Beach yesterday:”YOUR MILLION DOLLAR HOUSES WILL SOON BE UNDERWATER.” Is this in reference to sea level rise or the city’s notorious problems with mortgages? [The Miami Herald]

We at AFC recently joked that we should start a new category for news stories: “Living in Dystopia.” Well, today we have one that’s so dystopian and paranoia-inducing it’s practically a public mental health threat. Persistent Surveillance Systems is a private company that has secretly been flying aerial cameras over the city of Baltimore to document everyone’s movements and selling their data to the police. It’s like “real-time Google Earth.” How dystopian is this? So dystopian that the first sentence of this factual news article is virtually identical to the first sentence of seminal dystopian novel Neuromancer. Really. [Bloomberg]

In lighter news, Dominic Wilcox has opened the world’s first art exhibition for dogs. The London gallery has paintings in dogs’ color spectrum, hung at their eye-level and interactive installations. [Bored Panda]

Noah Charney is concerned about “art in the age of digital reproduction,” chiefly, that 3D-scanned and printed forgeries are reducing our appreciation of original works, or even hand-made copies. [Smithsonian]

Peter Doig’s bizarre legal troubles seem to have been resolved. The artist was being sued by a former Canadian corrections officer who claimed to own a painting Doig painted as an incarcerated teenager. This, despite the fact that Doig was never in the prison where the plaintiff worked. The whole case is just so weird. [Yahoo]

The Economist asks “Is Hacktivism Art?” We answer: sometimes? It’s one of those things like farming, where someone can use it as an artistic medium but the vast majority are just doing it because they need to eat. And then for every good piece of activist/hacktivist/farmer art there are 10 just horribly ill-conceived copycats. [The Economist]

Oh what a tangled web. Yesterday we linked to a report of a court ruling against restitution in the case of Nazi-looted paintings at The Norton Simon Museum. Today we learn that the person trying to reclaim the art is the daughter of a Nazi. [Culture: High & Low]

Queens City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer is killing it! He’s taken Mayor de Blasio on over his support of an out of scale development in Inwood which would include affordable housing units, but push more residents out of the neighborhood. And now he is blocking a new building development in Sunnyside that promises 100 percent “affordable housing”, but has numerous issues that have kept residents from supporting the development. This includes being out of scale for the neighborhood, being developed by a developer with other projects across the street known for their mismanagement, and not actually being affordable. [NY1]

Tuesday Links: Fox News Not A Fan of Dread Scott’s Flag at Jack Shainman

Jack Shainman has hung Dread Scott’s “A MAN WAS LYNCHED BY POLICE YESTERDAY” flag above the gallery, referencing the iconic Jim Crow era NAACP flag. Predictably, our colleagues over at Fox News find this controversial and insensitive following the mass shooting in Dallas in which five police officers were killed. Because in conservative logic, the deaths of five police officers somehow outweigh the roughly 100 unarmed black people killed annually by police? [Fox News]

Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance have presented the “Culture Forward” plan to retain and expand the neighborhood’s art scene in the face of large-scale developments. Most excitingly, they’re advocating that the city-owned properties at 31 Lafayette Avenue and 334 Furman Street be renovated into 30,000 square feet of artist studios and are offering affordable housing seminars for arts/culture workers. Mark Hudson doesn’t seem to be a fan of the Liverpool Biennial. His chief complaint seems to be that the future of art looks a lot like the 1980s, but the whole curatorial concept of “episodes” sounds bizarre and hokey. Has anyone else seen the show? A French court has indicted dealer Olivier Thomas over charges he participated in the theft and sale of three Picasso paintings from the artist’s stepdaughter Catherine Hutin-Blay. The paintings were discovered at the home of Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, who purchased them for €27 million from the Swiss businessman Yves Bouvier, who has been accused and fined for harboring the stolen paintings. And in a far more bizarre case of international art legal troubles: a Canadian corrections officer, Robert Fletcher, is suing Scottish artist Peter Doig for $5 million because he won’t admit to painting a landscape painting in Fletcher’s possession. According to Fletcher, Doig was arrested for LSD possession as a teenager in Canada in the 1970s and sold the painting (which could now be worth a hefty sum) to the corrections officer when on parole for $100. The plot thickens, as there’s also a now-deceased Canadian with a similar name whose circumstances also fit the narrative. [Daily Mail]

This is disgusting and also kind of cool: Central Saint Martins student Tina Gorjanc has filed a patent to clone human leather from Alexander McQueen’s DNA to produce a line of leather goods. I guess that human leather “Perfecto” jacket would be cyberpunk as fuck. [Dezeen]

Arbitrary Arbitration in Art Review’s Power 100

It’s very hard to comment on a list ranking anything — beer, Star Wars movies, or art world figures — without negotiating some serious sass fallout. When reading comments to the 2011 Power 100, published today by Art Review, I thought of tuning my ear by spending a few minutes listening to the trash talk that follows a competition on Drag Race. What would people have to say if Dasha Zhukova gave RuPaul a “bad girl” makeover? Or if Takashi Murakami could talk about how funky his chicken is? And who wouldn’t want to see Damien Hirst lip-sync to the Stacy Q song “Two of Hearts?”
