Artnews SA, the Polish Company that briefly owned ARTnews and Art in America, has filed for bankruptcy and will be liquidating all its assets. The bankruptcy was filed just two weeks after Peter Brant assumed all the assets for both publications, and announced that Brant Publications has become their legal owner. [artnet News]

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz has a show at Mauritshuis in The Hague showcasing life-sized models of the flip-sides of famous paintings. Expectedly, the details are mundane — ”Mona Lisa” has a written message that says “this way up”, while Matisse’s “Red Studio” is covered in chicken wire. “The back reflects the artist’s studio, it has nails, it has hardware and is always changing. Half of the Corcoran art school’s full-time faculty were laid off last month. To put in perspective, out of 19 full-time faculty, only 9 are coming back in the fall.The loss coincides with the school’s class of 2016 graduation ceremony, but also comes at a time of budget cuts, a shrinking student body, and the school’s integration into George Washington University. The latter has become a growing concern for the historical art school’s community, who have felt that the ongoing merger has had a lack of transparency in its proceedings. [Hyperallergic]
Diana Y. Chou has been hired by the San Diego Museum of Art as its new associate curator of East Asian art. Chou has organized museum shows in the United States and Taiwan for the past 15 years, and consulted with the Carnegie when it was reinstalling its Asian art galleries. At the San Diego Museum, she’ll be overseeing a collection containing 7,000 works, organizing shows and being involved with its acquisitions. [Artforum]
Former MoMA film curator Lawrence Kardish weighs in on the institution’s controversial firing of long-time assistant curator of film Sally Berger: “I no longer understand what goes on in my old stomping grounds… Doesn’t a curator have the right to pick and choose what is to be shown under his/her auspices?” Berger’s firing last week was tied with the wrongful cancellation of “Under the Sun”, a documentary about North Korea from February’s Doc Fortnight festival. What Happens Now That Peter Brant Officially Owns a Big Chunk of the Art Media Landscape?

The concentration of media ownership is never a good thing. Integration leads to anticompetitive behaviour in the marketplace — especially among publications owned by the same parent company. So should the art world be concerned by the recent news that Brant Publications, owned by powerhouse collector Peter Brant, now owns all the assets of Art in America, The Magazine Antiques, Modern Magazine and ARTnews, which joins his flagship, Interview Magazine?

It depends on how you look at it. Brant was already a majority stakeholder, which gave him full control over the companies. In July 2015, as the Observer reported, Brant Publications sold its 100% ownership of Art in America to Artnews S.A., the publicly-traded company based in Warsaw, Poland that owned ARTnews. BMP Media, a Brant subsidiary then purchased a 60% stake in ARTnews for $16.9 million.

So the only difference now is that he owns 100% of the stock. The question then arises: now that ARTnews is under private ownership, how will that impact its coverage moving forward, especially since it’s no longer a publicly-held media entity?

The Metropolitan Opera won’t bow to protesters who’d like to see the opera take a stance on the Russian government’s controversial gay rights laws, and also the government’s denial of Tchaikovsky’s sexuality. Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” premiered as the opera’s season opener last night. [Bloomberg]
The Art Loss Register has used some rather questionable methods to track lost art work. For example, the Register led a collector to believe a painting was not stolen, when in fact it was, so that he would buy it and unwittingly help the company collect a fee for its retrieval. [The New York Times]
Did Russia censor all 26,439 Squarespace sites over a satirical gay art PDF? So reads the headline of an article reporting on Loo.ch, the New York-based art, technology, criticism, and travel website run by Ukrainian expats Natasha Masharova and Anatoli Ulyanov since 2010. They believe two pieces criticizing Russia’s new anti-gay propaganda laws caused the block. Sounds plausible, but could more than one of these 26,439 other sites have published a few critical words on the law? [Animal]

Gross. Julia Halperin reports more museum woes, thanks to shoddy leadership. After this week’s news that MoMA plans to demolish the old Folk Art Museum building, the US Bankruptcy Court has ordered around 200 works seized from its collection. The works had been promised to the museum in 2005 by its former chairman, collector and jewelry merchant Ralph Esmerian, who later used the same work “as collateral to secure multi-million-dollar loans from Sotheby’s and Christie’s.” Esmerian never repaid his debts, and he’s currently in prison for wire fraud, so Sotheby’s will be selling them off this winter. Christie’s is upset because the work isn’t getting sold at Christie’s. Just drag it right through the mud. [The Art Newspaper]
