You don’t need to go to Kassel, Germany to know that the world seems on shaky ground. But this year’s documenta exhibition, “Learning From Athens,” nails home that idea, nonetheless. That’s quite intentional, given that documenta 14 artistic director Adam Szymczyk, along with a team of more than a dozen curators, chose to stake out a markedly “political” point of view. Though the word “political” can refer to pretty much anything or nothing when it comes to curation, Szymczyk and team have carved out a specific focus: the local is the global. And right now, documenta envisions that the world is in need of being rebuilt entirely—from the ground up.

Reimagining Dance For The Disabled Body In “Our Configurations” At Gibney Dance

Two audience members lick the pant leg and cane of performer Marissa Perel. While this happens she recalls awkward and downright insulting moments related to her disability. In one particularly horrifying story she tells the audience about a subway rider who called her a “bitch” after she refused to answer why she had a cane.

Fuck yeah! The Bruce High Quality Foundation University—a one-room schoolhouse located just above a bodega—returns this fall. The BHQFU is like grad school, but it’s mostly free, with classes offered on nights and weekends. In a lot of ways it’s better than grad school—instructors are accessible, and unbounded by university bureaucracy, they end up crafting courses straight out of a dream notebook.
