Monday Links: Pepe Plans Social Media Comeback

More “Pepe” news: the Anti-Defamation League has reached out to artist Matt Furie in an attempt to reform the cartoon frog’s image to be less racist. Does anyone else feel like the whole supposed Pepe scandal is the media/ADL/internet hardcore trolling everyone? [The New York Times]

Kader Attia is opening ”La Colonie,” a vaguely-defined art space near Gare du Nord in Paris. It’s not clear what exactly will happen in the new three story exhibition and event space, but knowing Attia’s work ethic, it will likely have programming that’s smart and politically-informed. I can’t watch documentation of this Sachiko Kodama installation and understand that what I’m watching is not CGI. Kodama magnetizes NASA’s ferrofluid rocket fuel, resulting in something akin to trippy visuals from some EDM subculture. [Atlas Obscura]

With online platforms eroding lower-end sales, and mega galleries dominating the high-end market, middle tier galleries are dropping like flies in New York and California. And more and more gallerists are having to work “for” their artists less and focus on the secondary market, Christian Viveros-Fauné explains: “the against-all-economic-odds gallery once begun with boundless ambition and maxed out credit cards is no more. Here’s the same idea put differently: the era of undercapitalized, illiquid, labor-of-love galleries that rely mostly or exclusively on the primary market for sales is over.” [artnet News]

Is new development driving up New York’s property values? Quite the opposite, it seems. Thanks to restrictive zoning in most of the city, new developments are bigger and more expensive where they can be—present zoning rules that favor lower densities make it impossible for most of the boroughs to create enough new housing units to absorb demand. Matthew Naimi built a house out of garbage and then blew it up, alarming his neighbors and bringing out the fire department. The project, described as a “Rube Goldberg chain-reaction contraption”, was designed to illustrate the connectivity of societal issues. [The Detroit News]

A Saudi artist, currently working on her P.H.D. in Australia, was told by her native government that she needed to live with a male guardian in order to pursue her studies. She’s since created the #IAmMyOwnGuardian hashtag under the social media nom de plum Ms. Saffaa in protest. [PBS]

Tuesday Links: Teapot Not Enough Dick-Coverage for Australian Painting

Headline of the day: “Bob Ross Was a Tyrant and Hated His Perm, Says Former Manager.” [artnet News]

Police were called to an art gallery in a small town in Australia over a complaint of a nude self-portrait by painter Dennis McIntyre. But you can’t even see his junk in the painting! It’s covered by a teapot. It’s not clear who exactly was so offended by this portrait that they actually called the police. According to gallery volunteer Beryl Ramsay, a group of elderly women recently visited the gallery and were far from offended: “Their only complaint was that they couldn’t lift the teapot to see what was behind it.” [The Border Mail]

Here’s an interview with Rossy de Palma, a.k.a. “Dama Picasso” about her decades of collaborations with Pedro Almodovar and how much fun being an artist was during La Movida Madrileña of the 1980s. [Dazed]

The Shchukin collection—which makes up the bulk of the Hermitage’s early modernist masterworks—is leaving Russia for the first time in a century for a loan to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. There’s a nice irony to this—Shchukin collected mostly Parisian artists during his lifetime and he fled to the French capital during the Russian revolution in which the state seized his art collection. Lisa Cooley talks to ARTnews about closing her gallery. Cooley cites art fair exhaustion as an issue, as well the rise of social media. Seeing and sharing so many images desensitizes people and erodes community and relationship building. That becomes a huge problem when rent rates demand that prices double or triple every year. “The scale is the problem—whether that is scale of information you have to process, or competing with the larger galleries. You can’t scale relationships.” The business model for smaller galleries isn’t working. Hopefully Cooley will get her artists paid. [ARTnews]

In the wake of the worst flooding Paris has seen in three decades, the Grand Palais exhibition hall reopened as floodwaters slowly recede. The Louvre, which had to move 250,000 works from their basement storage last week at risk of flooding, won’t reopen until Wednesday. [CBC]
St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum has unveiled a Rubens painting unseen for the past 80 years. “The Resurrection of Christ” only began to be restored in 2012 — it had become warped and darkened over the years — when the institution opened its own restoration center. [The Art Newspaper]
The new website for the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) is gorgeous. The navigation has shifted away from prioritizing on the front page programming at CCA’s physical space toward a curatorial framework that brings new and old materials on contemporary issues in architecture. “Can a museum be a magazine?” asks Cincinnati Art Museum curator Brian Sholis. “Pushes the Walker Art Center model further.” [@briansholis]
The rise of the surveillance age has inevitably led to a new cottage industry: stickers and plastic slides designed to cover up the front-facing cameras of our laptops, phones and even televisions. [Guardian]
Seph Rodney recaps the American Alliance of Museum’s recent conference, which was focused on the theme of “Power, Influence and Responsibility.” The conference inevitably led to discussions around whether the large organization could truly enact policies that expanded diversity, as well as what portion of the museum field is hostile to ideas like intersectionality; according to Rodney, at one panel focused on museum jargon, the term was referred to by panelists as a “problem” word. Friday Links: The Breakfast of Champions

How does Jerry Saltz and Roberta Smith do breakfast? Neither cook, so according to this AM-focused interview with Saltz, he goes to a nearby deli and gets four cups of coffee, then puts them in the fridge, and when they’re chill, dump them into big 7-11 Double Gulp cups with ice. Photographer Tod Seelie is leaving New York for LA because he’s been outpaced by the cost of living, and LA is similar, except it has “huge communal households that are building crazy bikes and tree forts in their yards.” [Gothamist]
A week of heavy rains in Europe has led to serious flooding, and its cost is now hitting institutions. The rising levels of the Seine, for instance, has flooded Paris streets, and and is at its highest level in nearly 35 years. Curators at the Louvre moved 250,000 works from its basement storage upstairs to avoid damage. [CTV]
Early career artists working in digital media, there’s an award for you. Equitable Bank’s Emerging Digital Artists Award is now accepting applications. The award comes with a $5,000 prize, and the judging panel includes myself, artist Alex McLeod and curator Amber Christensen. Deadline is September 15. [EDAA]
Definitely not attachment parenting here: a 7 year old Japanese boy, who had been missing for nearly a week after his parents left in a forest as punishment, was found unharmed. Even though the forest was known to include bears, the parents left him there because he had been throwing rocks at people and cars while playing at a river. [CBC]

Wednesday Links: VAGINA Is not a Dirty Word

Moscow is filled with terrible sounding public art. Apparently there’s been a Soviet-esque shift towards the kitschy and dumbed-down as the global community has withdrawn from an increasingly hostile Russia. [The New Yorker]

In other Russia news, performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky is refusing to accept a court’s closure of a criminal case against him. I have no idea what that means, but Pavlensky is known for anti-government performances such as sewing his mouth shut, nailing his balls to the Red Square, and setting fire to the Russian Security Services building’s door. Christie’s owner Francois Pinault is still really, really rich despite the auction house’s recent financial woes. So rich, he just signed a 50 year, $1 billion lease on a historic Parisian grain storage building by the Louvre at Bourse de Commerce to open a museum for his own collection. [Deutsche Welle]

Oh. My. God. Allison Wint, a Michigan substitute art teacher, was just fired for using the word “vagina” while teaching a lesson about Georgia O’Keefe. Like, VAGINA is a dirty word? Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with “other America”? Now I’m on a quest to find an especially “dirty” NSFW GIF of the Hump Day to dedicate to Harper Creek Middle School principal Kim Thayer. The Glendale, California City Council is debating how to select residents for units in the $30 million Glendale Arts Colony affordable housing complex. Some believe priority should be given to artists already living in Glendale. As a resident of a similar development, I have to say I wish they had offered the units to neighborhood artists first. The new wave of residents ended up changing the character of the neighborhood and displacing a lot of the people who had been living here for years. [Los Angeles Times]

Photographer Steve McCurry’s studio assistant, Bree DeStephano, has plead guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of artwork from her employer, including his famed “Afghan Girl” portrait. [artnet News]

Wednesday Links: Souvenirs of the Future and Scandals of Today

These might just be my favorite photographs ever. Laurent Kronental’s series “Souvenir d’un Futur” captures the senior citizens who have lived in Paris’s utopian modernist (and totally surreal postmodernist) public housing estates for decades. His human and architectural subjects seem to recall fading, more optimistic, stately times. [Dezeen]

Babacar M’Bow was hired for his position as director of the MoCA North Miami with a protracted, dramatic battle involving pretty outrageous and inappropriate language. Now, he’s been swiftly fired for pretty outrageous and inappropriate language. The circle of life. Imagine a boss asking [of the education curator] “Where’s Adrienne? She’s out here looking for Haitian dick!” [artnet News]

A few months ago, Paddy, Whitney, and myself had the pleasure of visiting the 21C Museum Hotel in Durham, North Carolina. The chain is an interesting for-profit model with the heart of a nonprofit—one that successfully delivers contemporary art to cities which might not otherwise be able to support a contemporary art museum. Now, 21C gets some love from The Guardian. [The Guardian]

With The Four Seasons restaurant leaving its landmark location in the Seagram Building in Midtown Manhattan many are wondering what its regular power lunchers will do. (Probably just go to its slated replacement by Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick.) On a recent Friday, The Times interviewed a number of its more famous diners, including Klaus Biesenbach and Agnes Gund. When asked what jacket he was wearing, Biesenbach replied, “H&M. [Pointing to his overcoat, blazer and pants] It’s H&M, Levi’s, Zara. It’s very, very $2.” Well played Mr. Biesenbach, well played. [The New York Times]

What is it about art forgery that makes every story seem so juicy and readable? Convicted forger Shaun Greenhalgh has a new memoir out that spills all the beans about everything from faking a Da Vinci to mixing the wrong white oil paints. Chemistry was never so sexy. [New Republic]

Artist Ellie Harrison and funders Creative Scotland have found themselves at the center of a public controversy over a project titled ‘The Glasgow Effect”. The term apparently refers to adverse health conditions and shorter life expectancy experienced by low income residents of the Scottish city. Creative Scotland gave Harrison a grant of £15,000 to spend an entire year within the Glasgow’s city limits, which she claims is to explore the idea of localism as a strategy for lowering her carbon footprint. It sounds like a very simple idea that is inexplicably complicated. Mostly, I’m jealous it didn’t occur to me to apply for a roughly $22,000 “not travelling” grant. [BBC News]

Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro has been eyeing some of the city’s local treasures as loot to be sold to fill budget gaps. And since it’s not like the city depends on the tourism industry, a plan like that should work out swimmingly. [The Wall Street Journal (paywall), artnet News]

Cecily Brown says she’s getting sick of only seeing female nudes so she’s painting more men. The artist left Gagosian and will open a show of small paintings at Maccarone in May. [Vulture]

New York state is going after art collectors who have avoided paying sales tax on their art purchases — and even those who have simply been intermediaries (that can be fought). This article names a few loopholes for collectors, but we also like that they warn tax-dodgers that they can be charged a penalty of up to 30% on the price of their purchased art in addition to the overdue sales tax. The lesson: don’t fuck with the New York State tax department. [Penta Daily]

Over 50,000 New York apartments will return to their rent regulated status by order of governor Andrew Cuomo. The governor lead an investigation that found that several landlords in the city were violating rent regulation laws. [Curbed]

Wednesday Links: NYC Gets a Harry Potter Spin-Off, Islamic Museum Director Removes Weapons

Timothée Chaillou, the artistic director of the art fair Also Known As Africa has resigned. The art fair was scheduled to open on December 3rd but was cancelled due to security concerns following the terrorist attacks in November. Chaillou cited the fair’s unexpected cancellation (he was not consulted) as the primary issue leading to his resignation. [The Art Newspaper]

This is nice: Open Source Gallery is functioning as a soup kitchen this month, where artists and volunteers prepare food for the homeless or curious and show their artwork. [DNAinfo]

A Bay Area man named Mario Silva has confessed to stealing $200,000 worth of glass sculptures in a trailer belonging to Chicago artist Alexis Silk. [Contra Costa Times]

In other art crime news, a PHD student visiting a kibbutz in Israel noticed that an anonymous painting that had been in a local museum’s collection since the 1950s was in fact one of the millions of artworks looted by the Nazis during the occupation of Paris. [The Times of Israel]

Israel’s museums are full of surprises lately: Nadim Shiban, director of Jerusalem’s L.A. Mayer Institute for Islamic Art, has removed a collection of historic weaponry from exhibition. His reasoning: “Talk art, not war.” [The Algemeiner]
