Yawn. Can’t rich people find something juicier to fight over? When I saw the headline I was totally hoping an art handler broke off Jeff’s dick in a “Made in Heaven” statue or something. Lisa Kuivinen, a 20-year-old School of the Art Institute of Chicago student, was killed when a truck crossed into a bike lane and collided with her. This is really tragic, and based on the photo provided, indicative of everyone’s biggest complaint about most American bike lanes: they’re painted between parked cars and the lanes for vehicle traffic. For the love of god, transportation planners, please just put the parking between a curb-adjacent bike lane and the street. We’re all so tired of people dying from bad design. [The Chicago Tribune]

Mayor Bill de Blasio makes a convincing argument as to why City Council member Ydanis Rodriguez should’ve supported rezoning a parcel in Inwood district. Basically, the plan offered developers the option to build taller buildings if they include affordable housing. Now, Inwood is just getting stumpy luxury condos with no affordable housing. It seems like another case of knee-jerk NIMBYism getting in the way of productive compromise. [Observer]

A 300 year old douche, one of the oldest douches in the city, has been found at City Hall! [Animal New York]
One of our favorite Red Hook galleries 247365 has taken over Eli Ping’s old basement gallery space in the Lower East Side. Their first opening’ll take place this Friday night. [Gallerist]
It’s hard to believe, but rents in Manhattan are dropping. Brooklyn rents continue to skyrocket. In any event, it’s still expensive to live nearly anywhere in the city. [Brooklyn Magazine]
Manhattan may be the most expensive city in the country, but Verge reports that the most expensive town to rent is in the oil boomtown Williston, North Dakota, where rents have reached a median of $2,394 for a one bedroom. [The Verge]

Round out Sunday with a Genesis Breyer P-Orridge film-screening and book launch at PS1 and we’ll call it a week. Just grin and bear it.

Monday Links: Some Women Aren’t Coatracks

Happy MLK Day, readers! We’re bringing you the best of the web this morning, but expect a lighter posting schedule due to the holiday.

Holland Cotter rails against an art world he sees affected at every level by money. Art, galleries, media are all identified as suffering.

Conservative art can encourage conservative criticism. We’re seeing a revival — some would say a disinterment — of a describe-the-strokes style of writing popular in the formalist 1950s and again in the 1970s: basically, glorified advertising copy. Evaluative approaches that developed in the 1980s and 1990s, based on the assumption that art inevitably comments on the social and political realities that produce it, tend to be met with disparagement now, in part because they’re often couched in academic jargon, which has become yet another form of sales-speak.

The antidote, at least to some of the problems he lays out, are outlets like Art F City and Hyperallergic. [The New York Times]

With the Sochi Winter Olympics soon approaching (and with an estimated $50 billion price tag) Malcolm Harris investigates how cities can end up taking on so much financial and political risk. The answers are fairly simple: guns and insurance. [Al Jazeera America]

We’re watching it online at 7 PM (2 PM for New Yorkers), and we’ve created a cheat sheet for the most talked about lots. Which records will be shattered? Which artworks will be remain unsold? And most important, will the auctioneer pronounce artists’ names correctly?

We made pros and cons for the works that were most interesting to us, so you can place your bets. Our predictions: cement trucks, dicks, and the letter U will all edge toward victory.

Artist Rashid Johnson will throw out the first pitch for the Cubs’ home game today, which begins at 1 PM CST. We don’t know how good his command is, but whatever his pitching ability, Johnson’s a better artist than the guy who made that atrocious Harry Caray statue outside Wrigley Field. The Guggenheim held a press conference this morning to announce a top-secret change in the organization. Well, that’s what we thought, but the changes won’t be dramatic: the museum will start a New York-based residency program for curators from around the globe. [Guggenheim]
Long flights can make anyone go stir-crazy, including artist Nina Katchadourian, who likes to sneak into the lavatory so that she can adorn herself with toilet paper. [Laughing Squid]

Simple art lesson: even world-famous artists need to play by the rules. Olafur Eliasson won’t be allowed to make his “breath bubble” installation at the 2012 Olympic Games; the Olympic Lottery Distributor cut off their funding after deciding that Eliasson altered his initial proposal.
