After a year-long campaign by the activist group New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, Apple has replaced its revolver emoji with a squirt gun. I guess that’s progress. [Hyperallergic]
Architects are also trying their hands at curbing gun violence. Spurred by terrorist attacks and mass shootings, a new interest in safety and making people feel safer has arisen in the architecture community. Phrases like “natural surveillance” are a little unnerving but the focus on making people feel less isolated seems like a step in the right direction. [Motherboard]

That guy who made the art pricing app filled with stolen images and data says it will be coming back. His argument is that many of the images are user generated and that no one is calling for Instagram to be taken down. This Week’s Must See Art Events: We’re Throwing a Post-Apocalyptic Dance Party

Tuesday night, we’re throwing a revolutionary dance party at Brooklyn’s Lovegun to celebrate our Fall Fundraiser. The world is a pretty dystopian place—and we need you to join the resistance. We’ll be collecting donations at the door; offering fabulous raffle prizes; and enjoying performances, DJ sets, and more post-apocalypstick than you can possibly scrub off your collar from Trey La Trash, Molly Rhinestones, Orlando Estrada and Ellen Degenerate.

But enough about us—if you survive tomorrow night’s apocalypse, you’re in for a week of solo shows opening, lectures from the likes of Ta-Nehisi Coates, open studios at the fantastic Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and several nights to see the weirdest beauty pageant imaginable from Psychic Readings Company. The week ends with an epic four exhibitions closing in Bushwick just after Sunday brunch time.

MATTE: Vince Aletti, “Something Soulful”

Vince Aletti has been allotted more firsts (and almost firsts) in his life than the average person. He was the first person to write about disco. He was one of the first writers to exclusively focus on photography shows in New York. He is the only person to have penned, “This is Not a Fashion Photo” a regular column in W Magazine, where he choses pictures that look like they were made for a fashion publication but weren’t. It’s all part of his interest in niche culture, photography and fashion. I sat down with Aletti to talk about how he’s spent the last forty years studying, curating and reporting on culture.
