Barbican resident and photographer Anton Rodriguez has launched an ambitious project to document every one of his 2,000 neighbors’ apartments in the famed brutalist landmark. Mostly, this makes me want to move there. [The Guardian]

Lawyer Pierce O’Donnell is suing his business associate, art adviser and New Age spiritualist Maitreya Kadre, because they bought a painting together that may or may not be a Jackson Pollock. Apparently she keeps the painting locked up in a storage facility, and has been stymieing attempts to authenticate it. What? [Los Angeles Times]

Jeffrey Uslip has unexpectedly resigned as curator at CAM St. Louis. His departure comes on the heels of a racially-charged debate over a Kelley Walker exhibition that many found insensitive in the context of a city with so much recent race-based unrest. [artnet News]

Were the early 90’s an exemplary period of shoestring-budget, groundbreaking curation? Molly Gottschalk argues that the cash-strapped art world of 2016 could learn from the past, as young gallerists weathered the bursting 1980s bubble with innovating programs not reliant on speculation. Of course, rents in art capitals were a fraction of what they are today. The Queens Museum’s new exhibition Chance Ecologies features artists considering the patches of “wilderness” that have reclaimed vacant lots around the borough’s booming waterfront. [Curbed]

Art collective Meow Wolf has convinced investors, including Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, to help them acquire and transform a Santa Fe bowling alley. When it opens, the space will be a psychedelic Victorian interior with maze-like secret passageways to sci-fi landscapes. It sounds insane. [Los Angeles Times]

At LA’s new Broad Museum, all of the floor staff receive 40 hours of training to become “Visitors Services Associates”. That means the people taking your ticket or guarding the artworks are also paid to talk to you about the art, like a docent. I’m not sure if this sounds great or super annoying. [NPR]

M+, Hong Kong’s newest contemporary art museum, is pretty ballsy. The institution is hosting a pre-opening exhibition entitled Four Decades of Chinese Contemporary Art that sounds as if it’s curated to piss off mainland censors—showing everything from artwork about Tiananmen Square to sculptures by persona non grata Ai Weiwei. Although the former British colony enjoys different freedoms from the rest of China, Beijing has been cracking down on dissidents. This is going to be a culture war battle to watch. [The Guardian]

DIA’s new director Jessica Morgan sounds awesome. The institution is back to showing artwork in NYC after she scrapped multi-year renovation plans, and more importantly, she’s a curator artists respect and like working with. [Vogue]

In other glamorous curator news, Stacy Engman has been accused of assaulting a fellow passenger on a flight from Istanbul to New York, where she was reportedly wearing a tiara and bit the other woman. Where’s the Vogue photoshoot for this? [artnet News]

Apparently Ken Griffin dropped $500 million on paintings by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning before the market cooled off. This would be a record for a private sale. [The Telegraph]

Massive Links: Ellsworth Kelly Dies at 92

Post-War Art master, Ellsworth Kelly, died yesterday at the age of 92. “I want to live another 15 years.” Kelly told the Observer in November 2015. “But I know I’m not going to. I’m not really whole any more. I think it [the state of his lungs] is to do with the turpentine, because I wasn’t a smoker, but I need the oxygen now. I feel like the world is over there, and it keeps coming at me, and I want to do it, respond to it.” [The Guardian] [The New York Times]
A fantastic review of Jackson Pollock’s black paintings in Dallas by Christopher Knight. Almost from the day they were first shown, Pollock’s controversial black paintings have been commonly regarded as emblematic of a hugely important artist falling apart and flaming out. After seeing “Blind Spots,” which unfortunately will not travel in the U.S., I now think of them in a very different way: The paintings instead show him experimenting with the artistic implications of what he had already achieved. Curator and writer Alexander Shulan just opened LOMEX, a new gallery in the L.E.S. The space, as described by Nate Freeman is remarkable for its lack of usable wall space. The first show includes no painting. Shulan says he wants to turn over shows every two weeks and promises a unconventional program. [ARTnews]
Joss Barton interviews Ted Kerr about his new project in honor of Robert Rayford, the first confirmed victim of AIDS in the United States, who died in 1969. It’s a fascinating story that prompted me to read Rayford’s Wikipedia entry, which offers a somewhat conflicting account of his life. [Visual AIDS]

Not everyone is pleased with the Guggenheim’s architecture competition in Helsinki. After the Helsinki council shot down the Guggenheim foundation’s proposal to build a museum within city limits in 2012, they decided to hold an architecture competition anyway, and show the best museum designs in Helsinki. Now, the foundation hopes that by showing the finalists —in Helsinki, proper—the Finnish will be more willing to build a museum. Architect and writer Michael Sorkin has devised a rival competition to the Guggenheim’s, The Next Helsinki, which encourages ideas that aren’t just another big museum. [ArchDaily]
