Good God we were busy yesterday. We spent the day posting images from the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection as part of “A Day for Detroit”, a co-ordinated blog effort designed to raise awareness about what could be lost were the collection to be sold. This effort was spearheaded by Modern Art Notes’ Tyler Green and was done in collaboration with approximately 20 other art blogs, who did the same on their sites, as well as some of Detroit’s professional art community. We asked artists, curators and dealers who either once lived in Detroit or live there now to name their favorite works from the DIA and to share their stories.

This week at the L Magazine I’ve put together a list of the best and worst exhibitions that stretches the term “exhibition” well beyond its intended use. That’s okay; art is not easily categorized. As for reflections, this was a good year for art. A lot of much needed change is here and on the horizon. From Occupy Wall Street, to ArtPrize, to Hennessy Youngman’s youtube channel, 2011 is the year art’s started to unravel a little.

What do you say to a guy who’s most frequently described as the artist who “radically redefined the status of the object in art”? I don’t usually get nervous about biography points like this, but I made an exception for Haim Steinbach. Unlike a lot of art, there’s no answer key to his angular shelves and arrangement of objects – and that can make a viewer nervous. Certainly, it affected me; it took two anxiety-filled weeks just produce a 700-word review on his show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery last month, and I still worry about whether I got it right.

Steinbach himself, though, isn’t quite so intimidating. Now 67, the New York-based artist seems just as interested in the door hinge next to him as he might be about any given conversation. He’s obsessed with objects in the world around him. Recently, we talked about how that intense focus informs his work and thinking.

“That show?!” Not long ago I made a passing comment about how much I liked Haim Steinbach’s exhibition Creature at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery (through October 22), and it didn’t go over well. Some people I spoke to criticized the artist’s work for having remained “the same” for over 25 years; others thought his object arrangements weren’t nearly as poignant as Jeff Koons. I don’t agree with either criticism.
