This week you’re in for a weird ride. From Aaron Pexa’s installation inspired by faeries from Welsh mythology (opening Wednesday at UrbanGlass) to a show of fake John Waters memorabilia Thursday night at La MaMa, there’s a lot of idiosyncratic happenings to partake in. Add to that itinerary a Friday night group show of emotion-altering colors (like the opposite of a mood ring!) at Small Editions and Eva Papamargariti’s speculative mutant frogs at TRANSFER on Saturday.

This Week’s Must See Events: Suggested Double Dates

This week, good events come in pairs. Art handling gets its moment of glamour with a charity calendar launch on Tuesday at Field Projects and a workshop at the Cue Foundation on Saturday. Wednesday night, hop from holiday parties at Postmasters and Ortega y Gasset. Or attend Sondra Perry’s screening and artist talk at EAI. Perry also has a closing reception at Recess the next night. And if simulacra of tragedies is your thing, check out the creepy photos of Corinne May Botz at Benrubi Gallery or Vincent Tiley’s “Sad Pretty Boys” at Christopher Stout Gallery, on Thursday and Friday respectively.

This Week’s Must-see Art Events: Dick Pics, GIFs, and Psychic TV

With a few exceptions, such as Lorna Mills’ At Play in the Field of the Lord opening Saturday at TRANSFER, there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming number of great shows opening this week. Which is kind of nice, actually. Take some time get the most out of art instead of rushing around to see it all. Tomorrow night, head to James Concannon’s book launch and leisurely leaf through his collection of dick pics. Attend a lecture or take a tour with Visual AIDS and reminisce about the 80s. Head to a discussion about feminist art at Artists Space on Friday. And Saturday, spend six hours listening to experimental music and watching performances from Psychic TV and other genre-bending artists. If that hasn’t expanded your mind enough, head to MoMA on Sunday for a documentary about the surreal album art of Storm Thorgerson. After a few busy weeks, isn’t it nice to sit with art and relax?

This Week’s Must-see Art Events: We Hope You Aren’t Allergic to Latex

Breaking news: it’s still August in New York. That means many galleries on hiatus, a great exodus of the wealthy to summer homes, and a boring sticky time for the rest of us. Or does it? Apparently all the queers, weirdos, and feminists are back from P-Town and Fire Island and ready to bring you a week of events that may be sticky but promise to be anything but boring. From sex workers’ narratives and pop-up Marxist sex shops to gender-bending masks and DIY sex toys, New York City is getting kinky this week. Fittingly, this is also your last chance to see Tom of Finland: The Pleasure of Play at Artists Space. While the norms are away, the queers shall play. Seriously, we hope you aren’t allergic to latex.

The ArtQuarters Press semi-annual prize for art criticism has announced that their deadline for submissions has been extended to December 12, 2014. The prize is £1,000. [Breese Little]

Eyebeam is stuck in Sunset Park’s Industry City. Their planned move to the BAM Cultural District has been stymied for reasons that are bit unclear. According to Executive Director Patricia Jones, the larger space would have doubled their operational costs. Did they not know this when they planned the move, though? An interview with artist Danielle Mysliwiec about her woven paintings and work with the feminist performance collective Brainstormers. I love how matter of fact the interview is: “Q: How do you see your work with this group and the “women’s work” nature of the weaving pieces relating to each other, if at all? A: I could probably concoct some kind of connection, but I don’t honestly feel that there is one. I came to weaving primarily because of its system, its relation to the grid, its history as a format for abstract imagery and because of its poetic/metaphoric possibilities. Claudia Hart’s show at Bitforms is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I take a look at the exhibition on Artnet; conceptually, Hart’s work is very weak. [Artnet]
Speaking of Bitforms, it seems the gallery cancelled Postfeminism, a show that was slated to open three weeks from now and was curated artist and curator Marisa Olson. Irate about the cancellation, Olson took her complaints to Facebook. [Facebook]
