Museum Punk Show in Need of A Sound Guy

In a past life, Mexico City’s Museo Universitario Del Chopo was a punk flea market. Today, it’s gone back to it roots (kinda).
Punk. Sus rastros en el arte contemporáneo is a fantastic survey of both punk and its impact on contemporary art. But when so much of that influence has been on video art, the logic of a gallery presentation is questionable.
The show feels a bit like it should be a film festival but has been squeezed into a white box. Good luck trying to sit through more than a dozen videos with overlapping sound on different loops.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Painted Rooms, Painted Faces, Digital Everything

Well, we hope the art world had a good summer vacation because school is officially back in session. There are so many good shows opening on Thursday night in Chelsea we just couldn’t list them all—Matthew Barney at Gladstone, Rashid Johnson at Hauser & Wirth and Lynda Benglis at Cheim & Read, to name a few.

We’ve focused on the absolute can’t-miss openings and those that might get overlooked below. From Wednesday night’s opening exhibition on the work and collaborative legacy of early digital/conceptual artist Alison Knowles at The Graduate Center to Thursday night’s absolute must-see double exhibition of Meleko Mokgosi [pictured] at both of Jack Shainman’s Chelsea locations there’s plenty to see and do.

But to offer a quick summary of where the most openings which nights, expect to spend Wednesday on the LES, Thursday in Chelsea, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday rushing from neighborhood to neighborhood. This should be a good week for Uber.

Lucia Moholy, wife of László Moholy-Nagy, is pretty much the unsung hero of the Bauhaus. While her husband taught at the school, she took gorgeous documentary photographs of everything from architecture to student-designed teacups. These negatives were left behind when she was forced to flee the Nazis, and Walter Gropius ended up using them to promote the school’s design philosophy while the campus remained occupied, first by the Nazis and then behind the Iron Curtain. Why is unnaturally (and obnoxiously) cheery travel vlogger Louis Cole now making bizarre North Korean propaganda? Photo filters have gone passé, it seems, now that augmented reality are taking over apps. Still, here comes Prism, an app that lets you apply so-called art filters like “Impression” or “Urban” to your phone pics; the app has the Mercury News speculating that “fine art may be the next career killed by the internet.” We doubt the latter on so many levels. We’ll publish a separate post dedicated to those events shortly, but in the meantime we’ve got a bunch of show recommendations that have nothing to do with BOS: Indulge your penchant for nostalgia with a rock and roll puppet show set in the late 60’s. Explore the world of mobile phone art. Brace yourself for a multichannel immersive video game experience. Even without BOS, there’s no free time in our schedules. There shouldn’t be any in yours either.

Recommended Shows Round Up: Chelsea, LES, & Even the UES

By now, we’ve surveyed the fall landscape in New York City, and we’ve seen enough to confidently air some complaints about that. If this tells you anything, Jen and Paul’s bus tour, which drives around mocking Chelsea, tops our list.

And among the other gems: a reconstruction of a 2007 installation by the late Jason Rhoades; Regina Rex’s new Manhattan gallery; and a show by Sadie Benning. And surprisingly, Paddy Johnson likes the Dan Graham pavilion on the Met’s rooftop. Those, and other redeeming shows, after the jump!
