This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Teach-ins, Yoni Eggs, Cemetery Secrets, and More

It’s a bit of a slow week for the art world, but that’s just fine by us. There are a handful of events we’re really looking forward to this week and those will be much better enjoyed without the stress of darting around to a dozen other openings. Those include Martha Wilson’s Activist History Teach-In at The 8th Floor on Wednesday night, Alex Ebstein’s solo show at Victori + Mo Friday night, and Sophie Calle at Green-Wood Cemetery on Saturday. Calle will be taking visitor’s confessions and entombing them. Never turn down an opportunity to check out Green-Wood, and certainly never an opportunity for consequence-free secret-telling.

PMF VII Weekend Highlights: Exhibitions

Last weekend, Open Space hosted their seventh annual Publications and Multiples Fair, a smorgasbord of DIY press, affordable artwork, and booths from artist-run spaces around the country. I posted a slideshow of the fair, but also went to about a dozen galleries neighboring the Baltimore Design School (site of PMF VII) and Open Space’s brick-and-mortar location. This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Talking GIFs, Kissing Painting, Watching Dogs

What a week for New York City! From the small gestures aimed at pedestrians, like project space FOUR A.M. in the Lower East Side, to the triumphant return of Jack Early to Chelsea on Thursday night, we’ve got you covered on weeknights. Our very own Paddy Johnson will be speaking at NYU on Friday all about our favorite medium: GIFs. Be sure to pre-register for the event, which has a reception where you can say hi! Then, head to Bushwick for a night of group and two-person shows at neighboring artist-run spaces Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Transmitter, and Underdonk. Saturday, check out perpetual AFC fav Alex Ebstein’s yoga mat paintings at Ridgewood’s lorimoto. But Sunday might be the day that goes down as one of the weirdest and most fun in the city’s art history: Greater New York artist Hayley Aviva Silverman is mashing-up 1990s disaster cinema with 1830s literature for a theatrical production starring dogs. Let that singular experience marinate on your 35 minute M train ride to Chinatown Soup, where Joyce Yu-Jean Lee’s pop-up cybercafe promises to give us a glimpse of what the internet looks like in China (hint: very different) plus snacks!

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: The Creative Time Summit, Juliana Huxtable, and Cyborg Squirrels

This weekend, everyone will be (or should be) attending The Creative Time Summit in Bed-Stuy. Leading up to the all-day events this weekend, however, are a handful of promising openings. Monday, check out massive, rarely-seen works from abstract painter Friedal Dzubas in Midtown. Thursday, a Jeff Koons show at Gagosian attempts some metaphysical alchemy, and Friday morning, Juliana Huxtable’s new MoMA commission opens. Friday night we couldn’t be more excited for solo shows by Alex Ebstein and Meriem Bennani at Cuevas Tilleard Projects and SIGNAL, respectively.

Frieze week is being described as a test for the art market following a record-breaking spring but a tumultuous summer. The verdict? Sales seem to be off to a pretty good start. [Bloomberg]

In related news, Phillips’s auction sold out on the first day of London’s art-buying week, signifying that the art market is still strong and that the auction house might be a challenger to the supremacy of Christie’s and Sotheby’s. [Art Market Monitor]

But the best part of Frieze week is probably Misako & Rosen’s booth, where Ken Kagami is drawing personalized caricatures of fair attendees’ penises and breasts. [artnet News]
