GIF of the Day: How We All Feel After Art Basel Miami Beach

Here are some GIFs of a little girl throwing a tantrum and taking a nap on an overcast, damp beach. This is exactly how we all feel today, so we won’t be posting like we usually do.

Here’s a summary of just what we’ve been up to in Miami:

We brought you not one, not two, but three itineraries for ABMB week.
We launched our new project space, Fine Art Gallery, at Artist-Run at the SATELLITE Show, with F.A.G. Bar.
We were disappointed by the main fair at the convention center.
Paddy loved UNTITLED.
I liked NADA, but Paddy still had mixed feelings. We both agree that The Fontainebleau isn’t a great venue for that art fair.
Pulse’s move to the beach was welcome, but the fair still needs some work.
I noticed a lot of booths with similar looks, and picked who wore it better.
After a week of trudging around lackluster commercial fairs, Paddy expressed our undying love of Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Artist-Run at the SATELLITE.
And yesterday, love (of the hopefully undying variety) seemed to be in the air at the Artist-Run—two of the participants decided to get married after having met each other just four days prior. Of course, we were there to document the moment in GIF.

Don’t worry, there’s more to come about our Miami adventures. And we haven’t forgotten about New York—our regular events listings will be back tomorrow.

But for now, we’ll be sleeping off our Basel weekend.

Two Artists Just Met and Married at SATELLITE’s Artist-Run Show

The Artist-Run at SATELLITE just closed, but things stayed interesting here up until the end. While Art Basel had a stabbing, we had a wedding. James Swainbank, who was showing in Open Space’s Stupid Bar, just married Vinegar (Jennifer) Avery, who was also participating in the show through Yellow Peril Gallery. Really.

Friday Links: The World Needs Critics, and Drug Dealers Need Basel

Jerry Saltz names “Coming Together: Surviving Sandy” the best show of the year– with NO MENTION of the wave of artist evictions which made the show possible. Roberta Smith also gave the show a glowing review, because it celebrated community. We have been ripping our hair out at the office. More on this soon. [New York Magazine, New York Times]
Now’s a good moment to immerse the public in Russian performance art, what with Pussy Riot, Voina, and Petr Pavlensky (the balls-nailer) making headlines and being charged as criminals. In its current conference, the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture hopes to educate people about the full history and scope of the culture. “What’s frustrating for a lot of practitioners in Moscow is that they feel like they’re shouting into a vacuum,” founder Dasha Zhukova tells Artinfo, “because what gets reported on are the negative things rather than the steps that people are taking to develop culture and society.” [Artinfo]

Monday Links: The Last Day We Talk About Miami, Promise

The Miami art fairs have come and gone. The verdict: Unbelievably rich people bought up an unbelievable amount of art. But why now? One answer: The global population of the super rich has grown, and art is seen as a “safe asset” for investment. [The Art Newspaper]
Or is it? Felix Salmon takes on the problems of art market reporting. First up: The “art market is like the stock market” fallacy. [Reuters]
But maybe you’re the type who wants to think there’s at least a correlation between the two markets. Okay, so imagine the sales boom is all because of scaredy cat investors, or “an attempt by people with money to diversify after having been burned in the stock market during the Great Recession.” [CNN]
I’m not sure how many rich people it took to create robust sales at the fairs, but maybe we can figure out a number by looking at how many took private jets in and out of Miami. There were at least 200. [Omaha]
Thanks to the High Line, New York has a new roach problem. Roaches found living in the park’s non-native plants have “special powers.” Likely, they cannot read your mind, destroy all lands of the target player, or leap over skyscrapers, but they can withstand freezing temperatures. Pizzabook will make Facebook look like a pizza. There is no better reason to make your screen into pizza than this: As of this moment, Facebook looks like somebody drew a website on a sheet of paper, then added some blue marker so that it wouldn’t look like a series of too-flat rows and columns.
