We’re on the road today, but will return Tuesday.

I had originally planned on running the Emerging Artist Series this week, but that’s not happening for a number of reasons not the least of which being the 28.8 Modem I happen to be working with. I’m on vacation all this week in Canada, so there won’t be a lot activity on this site during this time other than a few fresh links.

Maria Dumlao, Interrogation Mark, (cream livingroom) digital collage, 2006

The digital collages of Maria Dumlao may owe a lot to conceptual artist Martha Rosler, but it has to be said that Dumlao’s voice remains distinct in these constructed interiors, which suggest a quite dread simmering just beneath their cream colored surface.

In other news, Corporate America once again removes me from the city. I’ve got a bunch of content I’m pretty excited about scheduled to arrive in short order however, so look forward to that.

Well, this week is a wash, but there are some great projects in the pipe which will appear after the weekend.   I leave you with the work of Anne Polashenski.

Sometimes best intentions just aren’t enough to get a post up before 6 pm.  Luckily, there’s Tom Rubnitz to help you get through the last hour of work.

Marc Bell, “Landscape in the World,” 2003; Ink, gouache, collage on board; 11″ x 8 1/2″

We’ve got a couple of much needed reviews in the pipe, but today we are out of the office so you’ll have to wait another day for those pieces to arrive. In the meantime enjoy to the work of Canadian illustrator Marc Bell.

Namely a result of the fact that not much happens in Chelsea this time of year, summer hours have been instituted here at AFC. In addition, it has to be said that contrary to the popular belief that bloggers are wholly impervious to the effects of the sun — even those such as myself who have been blessed with zero skin pigment, (the biological equivalent to a hankering for skin cancer) — I still enjoy going outside every once and a while. Needless to say, even though it may be at the risk of our health, posting will be a little lighter for the next two months.

In other news, in the last of our posts on ROFL!, the Internet competition we helped curate at Joe’s Pub last week, the winning videos of Tony Carnevale are embedded below. This kid won for a reason, so be sure to watch these shorts.

One of more aggravating aspects of the icommons blog that I’m supposed to like is the fact that there is a delay before the publishing of articles for voting and editing.  I don’t mind the feedback, but the voting queue time drives me mad.

While I wait for my latest exhibition review to load into the system, I have one cultural observation about Dubrovnik that would be tourists might want to take note of before visiting:  The city seems to be almost wholly devoid of clocks.  As someone who has zero sense of time, and arrived without a watch (or cell phone) this has proved to be something of an annoyance.

Consider this a hastily written post as I am on my way to catch a plane to Croatia. Look forward to all kinds of posting from in a day or two.

I suppose I’m just not tough enough to suffer any more than three lost posts due to crashing browsers before I call it quites and simply publish a posting notice for the day. Corporate America’s old computers, and Internet “safe guards” hate Art Fag City.

It’s not that we intend to be working remotely every Friday, it’s simply turned out that way for the last several weeks. Needless to say, there will be no post today. Next week however we will be announcing some exciting new projects we’ve been working on, so do stay tuned!

Note: Apologies for the missing emerging artist jpeg in this post. Please blame my lack of access to browsers that don’t blow.

I hate to issue posting notices that simply explain that there will be posts later on in the day, but since we’ve been gone for the weekend, it seems appropriate in this case to do so.  More to come soon!

We’re out of town today again, but we’ll be back Monday.   Featured above is the work of Danielle Mysliwiec.

I’m out of town so there won’t be any posts today. We will issue a reminder though that tomorrow is the NADA Art Book Swap in Chelsea, so don’t forget to bring your old books out to exchange for new ones.

Also as luck would have it, a tipster sent our offices spam so strange we felt it fit for republishing. We don’t actually recommend you follow the link below.

Hello my friend!

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog, if medicine prices here (http://softsoil.hk) are bad.

Look, the site and call me 1-800 if its wrong..

My dog and I are still alive :)

As some of you may have noted, I posted the first of a two part interview with the New Media art collective MTAA over the weekend, so you can scroll down to read some of that text below or simply head directly over to the iCommons blog by clicking on this link.  While you’re there you may also observe the second half of the interview which is scheduled for publication today. Unfortunately, I won’t have the opportunity to directly link to the interview today, as once again, I am away.

‘Meh’: Apathetic Expression Enters Collins English Dictionary - Yahoo! News

“The dictionary defines “meh” as an expression of indifference or boredom, or an adjective meaning mediocre or boring. Examples given by the dictionary include “the Canadian election was so meh.”" I can’t imagine a word more inappropriately applied to the last Canadian election. Via: Hrag

Architecture Review - Art Gallery of Ontario - Frank Gehry Puts a Very Different Signature on Toronto Museum - NYTimes.com

“It is not a perfect building, yet its billowing glass facade, which evokes a crystal ship drifting through the city, is a masterly example of how to breathe life into a staid old structure. And its interiors underscore one of the most underrated dimensions of Mr. Gehry’s immense talent: a supple feel for context and an ability to balance exuberance with delicious moments of restraint.”
