Travis Lindquist [image protected here from viewers] - caption lifted from James Wagner’s blog

James Wagner reports that an unidentified Capla Kesting employee and proprietor David Kesting yelled at both him and his partner Barry Hoggard last Friday after Wagner attempted to take photographs inside the gallery. Setting aside the fact that no sign prohibiting photography had been posted, I can’t imagine what kind of day you have to have to be rude to two of the most generous and well mannered people in the New York art world.

As Wagner tells it, the gallery expressed concern over the copyright of artist Travis Lindquist’s images, an argument that makes less and less sense to me each time I hear it. Under what circumstances does an artist suffer when their work is viewed by more people? Since when do low resolution digital files replace an original work of art? What possible alteration to a web ready image will effect the artist’s drawings?

James Wagner and Barry Hoggard each have blogs in addition to running ArtCal, the opinionated gallery listing service in New York (for which I am the listings editor) so I’m pleased to second the announcement that we will no longer list the gallery’s shows. Of course, we never did list them all that often. You’ll note the only place Capla Kesting’s “controversial” Daniel Edward’s sculpture Paris Hilton Autopsy appeared was on this blog, and we’re not exactly fans.

Choice quote from Radar, "Today, when a hip band allows Outback Steakhouse to co-opt one of their most beloved songs, Millennials (those born between 1982-2002) don’t call it selling out. It’s a cogent business decision."

Clementine ‘sisters’ bow out—with no regrets

By October of 1996, they had [raised] the princely sum of $60,000— enough to cover their expenses for the first year. (Now, 12 years later, they have to sell at least $80,000 every month to cover expenses.) Via: Bloggy

Robert Rauschenberg, Titan of American Art, Is Dead at 82 - New York Times

“PGh0bWw+PG…” previously in the place of this link; technical error, or homage to Rauschenberg? You decide. From the obit. “Anything you do will be an abuse of somebody else’s aesthetics.” says Rauschenberg, “I think you’re born an artist or not. I couldn’t have learned it. And I hope I never do because knowing more only encourages your limitations.”
