UNTITLED. organizers should be giving themselves a big pat on the back. Now its fourth year, the fair is clearly its strongest iteration yet. Part of this is just natural maturing of exhibitors over the course of the last few years—Asya Geisberg, SITE LAB, and Microscope are just three examples of programs that have consistently improved. But the fair’s also done a good job picking up strong new exhibitors, perhaps most notably this year, the Hole and Postmasters.

Art Basel Feels Like Last Season’s Trunk Sale

by Paddy Johnson on December 3, 2015

My Art Basel experience will sound familiar to almost everyone following the fair. After a day at Art Basel Miami, most dealers I spoke to still had work available. That’s not to say that sales were slow— just slower than the usual mad rush we’ve become accustomed to over the last few years. According to art consultant Josh Baer, that’s not because the art was bad, but because collectors have become more thoughtful.

Yeah right. Collectors have not suddenly transformed into more curious and discerning people. They’re just not oblivious to the obvious: most of the art on view looked like B-rate work we’d seen a hundred times already. Even people who have nothing to do all day but buy things will eventually get bored of that.

It’s raining plastic raindrops. Yes, Miami Art Week is upon us, and you’ve already gotten our take on what’s worth checking out outside the satellites. Traffic is promising to be a real shit show with the Venetian Causeway being closed, a favoured route to the Beach. Even though the city has a free, Basel express bus, getting around will be even more of a hassle. So more than ever, plan ahead, and rely on our curated fair guide. We’re doubtful you’ll be able to do it all, but that’s always the case anyways with Miami—at least you try to do it all. Gold star for effort.

Here, in no particular order, are our picks for what you can see today or this weekend.

Following last week’s terrorist attacks, the art fair Paris Photo was forced to close. This week, the organizers launched an online simulacrum of the exhibition. Exploring the largely-empty fair is eerie, awkward, and uncannily poignant.

We’re pleased to announce that Art F City is launching a new project space/curatorial platform called Fine Art Gallery. Fine Art Gallery will be primarily based out of Brooklyn, but we’re kicking off our programing with a booth in Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Satellite Show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2015.

We’ll disclose more details about our project in the coming weeks, but we’re pretty excited about the new art fair, which will feature international artist-run spaces and collectives in Miami Beach’s defunct Ocean Terrace Hotel. Tiger Strikes Asteroid released the exhibitor list today, and we’re happy to report that it includes many of the galleries who participated in Baltimore’s Artist-Run Art Fair this summer, which we christened “The Art Fair that Doesn’t Suck”.

CHICAGO- At around 3 PM yesterday, the EXPO VIP preview looked like a blank canvas. For nearly three hours, few collectors had circulated about the fair, a surprise given that there were over 60 new galleries on the fair roster. Those included heavy hitters like Pace, Salon 94, and Steve Turner. Dealers were getting anxious.

By 6PM the visitor numbers had changed. The Museum of Contemporary Art Patron Reception was packed with collectors indulging in small plate food and drinks despite the storm warnings in effect.
