Wikipedia lists eleven variations on the color beige. These range from the buff nude color of “desert sand” to the off-white, starry sheen of “cosmic latte.” All these variations make beige a difficult color to pin down; thankfully, for Color Wheel, that means beige can describe almost any pale skin color. There’s a bunch of skin-related art in Counter Forms, the current four-person show at Andrea Rosen, so that makes our job of finding beige in art relatively easy.
In this show, Tetsumi Kudo, Alina Szapocznikow, Paul Thek, and Hannah Wilke all make grotesque versions of human body parts—most of them beige. We get Kudo’s penis-gardens, Thek’s chunks of human flesh, Wilke’s ceramic vaginas, and, featured here, Alina Szapocznikow’s penis-lamp. This lamp is particularly tacky, but we appreciate how the woman’s chin balances gracefully atop the tip of the lamp-base.

The woman is being a dickhead. Either that or this is where Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky got their idea for a glowing prick from as seen in their new comic book Sex Criminals.
