Always on the move, galleries in the Lower East Side continue to play musical chairs. The latest in the shuffle is taking place at 133 Orchard Street, formerly home to On Stellar Rays. Brand new gallery Julie Meneret Contemporary Art will officially take over the storefront space with its first exhibition this November. On Stellar Rays is still around—they’ve moved to 1 Rivington Street, a location formerly housing Sue Scott Gallery.
Gallery owner Julie Meneret permanently relocated to New York from Paris just two years ago, and quickly chose the Lower East Side to showcase emerging international artists, many whom have yet to show in New York. This will be her first time running a gallery. Through following the scene she was able to recognize that “the best place to show this generation of artists is on the Lower East Side.” Plus, she did nab one of the better spots in the Lower East Side; unlike many galleries dotting Orchard Street, “it’s not narrow like a lot of spaces.”
Rare for the Lower East Side, too, Meneret is offering artists on her roster (four so far: Jonny Briggs, Jin Joo Chae, Frederic Nauczyciel, and Zakaria Ramhani) six-month-long residencies in Manhattan to produce new work. That means an apartment in Manhattan and studio space in Long Island City.
The first show this fall will be a solo show by Moroccan artist Zakaria Ramhani, opening on November 6th.
