The government shutdown continues to be a well of inspiration here at the AFC offices. In celebration of the AFC Pandacam, a livestream of bloggers and artists in panda costumes run for as long as the National Zoo’s pandacam is on hiatus, we’re highlighting those two colors basic to pandas; black-and-white.
Joyce Pensato’s drippy paintings are often only black-and-white, and that reduced palette works well with us. It gives her cartoony paintings a nightmarish vibe, making her Batmans look like any number of fantastic demons conjured up from the depth of any pop culture-tormented brain. When it comes to making the familiar strange, Pensato’s a pro. We’re looking forward to seeing her paintings in a group show opening this Thursday at Bleecker Street Arts Club.
