This week we bring you learnèd jobs that lie somewhere between academia and museum work. Are you a recent Museum Studies major? An artist ready for tenureship? These jobs will feel familiar to those who find comfort in places of learning.

  • Art Museum Coordinator of Academic Affairs (Poughkeepsie, NY)

How to apply

Here’s a job for someone with an interest in getting people working with pre-existing collections. The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College is looking for someone with five to seven years of professional or academic experience (say, a PhD) to be a liaison between the college and the art center. The job is to encourage professors to interact with the Art Center’s collection, integrate it into their curricula, and produce exhibits. There will also be the opportunity to team-teach courses in the college and help develop the collections.

  • Contractual Teaching Artist at the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY)

How to apply

If you’re an artist looking to piece together a bunch of teaching contracts, the Studio Museum’s School and Community Program could add a job to your roster. They need a teacher who can develop curricula for kids, teach it, and be a link between the Museum and its educational programming department. It also includes leading school groups on tours of the Museum. You should have at least two years of arts education experience and will be required to submit a sample lesson plan in your application.

  • New Museum Senior Research Fellow (New York, NY)

How to apply

If you’re a doctoral candidate aspiring toward a career as a curator, this two-year research fellowship could be the essential stepping stone. As a senior research fellow, you will, among other things, conduct research for New Museum exhibitions, participate in the creation of museum publications (such as the Museum Anthologies), develop the Digital Archive, and organize public programs and lectures. Apply for this job now if you’re interested because it looks like museum wants to hire quickly (by museum standards). They have a start date listed for September and the job was posted August 27th.

  • Open-rank Position for a Film and Video Artist (Amherst, MA)

How to apply

Put your years of contract teaching film and video art behind you. Amherst College’s relatively new Film and Video program is looking for a Film and Video Professor who’s actively exhibiting and has at least three years teaching experience. The position will be tenure track or with tenure. This Professorship entails teaching two courses a semester at the introductory level, advising honors students, and overseeing the installation of the college’s new media facility.

  • Curatorial Assistant for the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) (New York, NY)

How to apply

Turn your intimate knowledge of (or obsession with) costumes into a Curatorial Assistantship at the Museum at FIT. You’ll be asked to work with professors and students, prepare specialized classroom lectures, and help students use the collections database. You will also get to work with curatorial staff on Museum projects. You are required, unsurprisingly, to have a Bachelor’s in Art History or a related field, a solid knowledge of costume and design history, and experience working with costume collections.
