Marina Abramovic to Build a Temple for Abramovicism

by Clara Olshansky on July 29, 2013 Newswire

Marina Abramovic is seeking funds for her new cult, The Marina Abramovic Institute. We’re not kidding. She’s seeking $600,000 on Kickstarter to finance whatever this thing is, and we’re afraid.

According to a video on the Kickstarter, when you enter the institute, your cell phone will be taken away, you’ll be given a small, wooden table on which to sleep, and, for part of the day, the public will observe you in a glass enclosure. That’s what you’d be paying to build. And the Kickstarter page tells that a $1000 donation will let you stare at Abramo-Jesus through your webcam (which, granted, some people think is perfectly reasonable).

The promo tells us that the institute will “premiere long durational works of performance art, dance, theater, film, music, opera, and more.” Like sitting in a chair and staring at people for 750 hours. “Visitors to MAI will be invited to participate in the Abramovic Method, which will prepare them to experience long durational work.”

Basically, she’s training her art audiences to properly receive the glory of her work. Those who understand they need to bask in its brilliance need to pay up. This kickstarter, which is funding only the design phase of the institution is just the start.
