Art F City Redesigns

Nathan Cooley, There Will Be No Miracles Here, 2009, Installation at Dean Gallery, Edinburgh.

It’s a big day for Art Fag City. Today, we launch our redesign, move to a new url, and change our name. From now on we’ll be going by Art F City. The reasons for this change are probably obvious: after seven years as Art Fag City, we’ve finally grown tired of having our emails automatically filtered into spam, living without a Facebook page that actually uses the blog’s name, and being referred to anonymously in the mainstream media as “an art blog” that did such and such. We’d like that to change.

So, consider this a first step (we’ll be launching mobile shortly). We’ll be tweaking the design a little as the days go forward, but I’m pleased with what we’ve got here. So take a bit of time with the site, adjust the background to the GIF of your choice (you can do this by toggling through the number menu on the right-hand side of the site), and enjoy.

Congrats on the new look and move. I’ll continue to hang around AFC, an Art F-hag (Art Fhag?) eager to take in your latest news & views.

Love the new site! You might want to consider moving the GIF-changer links out a bit further. On Safari, the scrollbar actually sits on top of the page, so it’s a really tiny click area.

. . . it’s Coley . . .

The word “fag” has outlived its usefulness for the site — quite understandable. Such is the fate of most attention-grabbing ploys perpetrated by fledgling enterprises. You are growing up: Bravo.

Paddy has been in the game for at least 7 years that I know of — I think she started Art Fag City around the same time I started at Myartspace… that is not ‘fledgling’ in my book. Art blogging is a tough business… especially if you rely on ad revenue / donations. I’ve see a lot of art blogs like this drop out of the game in less than 3 years. She is a staple of the US art blog community. Art Fag City is a staple of the US art blog community.

Congratulations, Paddy. You do good.

Bummer, here; I really liked the name: it was very discontented, unsubmissive and rebellious. But I guess if you’re in the big time, and everybody is reading you, you can’t have it and follow through with more body slams 😉 Good Luck!!

This reminds me of the day petiteteenager.com renamed itself to ptclassic.com .

…Do you feel a bit odd visiting a site called Petite Teenager? I first selected it because out of 1000’s of names, that was what my dear visitors clicked most. I also never expected the site to last so long, much less become such a huge part of my life. When I was a bit younger, it was perfectly acceptable (to me) but as the years go on – being the guy behind such a suggestive name makes me cringe a little.

I am in the process of launching a mirror for the site: PTClassic.com, for those of you who would prefer a cleaner domain name to visit. It’s not complete yet, the galleries are still shown under petiteteenager.com but we’re on the way. If I feel uneasy recommending or being seen browsing a domain “petite teenager.com” – I’m sure some of you guys too 🙂

Thank you, as always, for visiting, please enjoy the site ^_^

kinda feels like selling out for the mainstream. sorry.

Okay, I kind of like it now; I see the “artificity,” the artifice, also rhymes with “shitty”. Cool. I’ll resubscribe to your mailings, now. lol.

To delve into the puerile, why not: (f)Art City with the brackets? Couldn’t be worse than leaving an orphaned letter out in the cold, only to be cropped out by a gleefully unknowing copy editor.

Like the redesign, first thing I did was play with the background options — nice touch. Once note, on the home page, use the current twitter icon (the tweeting bird) instead of the “t” which is no longer used by twitter and is too reminiscent of the Tumblr icon.

You’ll always be fags to me if that makes you feel better ( I mean that in a hateful way )

Paddy, from an SEO angle… do you think the use of ‘Fag’ hurt the blog ranking-wise? I always wondered about that… since the word is often used in a negative way — I’m not sure how Google, for example, handles use of the word. I ‘get’ why you made the change… but damn, you guys branded that name well.
