If you’re not one of the few people taking “a break” this week and heading down to Art Basel Miami Beach (HA), then you’re stuck up here, with only the art and the artists. So. excited. Here are a few of the things we’ll be doing up here:
Today, December 3rd
Protest: Day of Action, Cooper Union
Til 6 PM, Cooper Union students will be staging a “Day of Action” against the administration’s decision to start charging admission to new students.
The administration has claimed that it’s been left no choice, having to reduce over $20 million in annual operating deficits by 2018, and $37,500 tuition scholarships it’s granted students each year. Students have pointed to the new $111 million building as the culprit. They’ll be protesting this afternoon. We care because this isn’t just about Cooper kids— the school has, til now, been one of the very few examples of a free higher education in this country.
12-6 PM, 41 Cooper SquareFriday, December 7th
Opening: From Point A to Point B, AMO Studios
GIFRIENDS are four friends who like to make GIFs together. Scrolling through their site is a little like looking at a friend group’s Polaroids. They have pretty good 3D shots (I like “Matt throwing tootsie rolls“) and Bushwick shots on the site (above). Here, they’ll be showing travel GIFs, centered around the artist’s point of view, in “From Point A to Point B,” which seems like a fitting title for a GIF show.
8-11PM, AMO Studio, 55 Waterbury St. Brooklyn
