Remember life before the storm? There were Halloween parties, functioning subway cars, and, on Saturday, there was Chelsea Sound. Non-profits Printed Matter, Family Business, Eyebeam, and Electronic Arts Intermix rallied together to host a festival of “artists in sound,” resulting in a day of music-related performances, exhibitions, and screenings.
From what I saw Saturday, the forecast for this festival’s future looks bright: there were more people milling around the non-profits than I’d ever seen during a weekend afternoon. EAI’s video screening was the most well-attended, and their programming reflected the great turnout. The videos included Nam June Paik jamming with hardcore band Bad Brains, a young Cory Arcangel and his sister bopping around as teen band “Insecticide,” and Kalup Linzy rapping about bad breath. After seeing Michael Smith’s Go For It, Mike (1984), Smith’s catchy pop song stuck in my head for hours. It was a good day.
