Back in the 1980s I listened to a lot of Laurie Anderson. It wasn’t until some time later that I was exposed to Philip Glass, by way of soundtracks like Koyaanisqatsi. Then when I got to see Einstein at BAM this year, I finally put it all together, how Glass had influenced Anderson (and probably everyone else) throughout the 80s, how Glass and Wilson had set so much of that tone and style. Watching the opera was like a flashback to all the popular avant garde music of that time. What wonderful, beautiful nonsense!
