Eryk Salvaggio who use to make work at the now defunct one38.org. He currently lives in Japan and blogs at http://thisjapaneselife.org He wrote this a few days into the March 2011 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear emergency. It hard to use the title “best” or “favorite” in this context but it was a moment when the net was able to humanize, without sentimentality, an event in a way that no other media was able.

The work of Louis Doulas on this project is kind of absurdly good. The content is a bit all over the place, but there are really rare gems worth looking at within this archive of great “post-internet” related articles. Caitlin Denny’s article on Herzong’s Caves, Tom Moody’s piece on VRML and ray-tracing programs, Dan Baird’s trip out to find transcendentalism in NASA space flight centers… all good stuff.

Robert Smithson, The Collected Writings (on Google Books) // http://books.google.com/books?id=SHfHZhN9vzcC&lpg=PP1&dq=robert%20smithson&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q&f=false

I hesitated with this link because I felt a book that has been sitting on my shelf since 1995 wasn’t very sexy, but the thing is I use Google Books to search book I already own and have read – it is the ultimate index. That The Collected Writings are finally available on line, in a searchable format, is water shed event.

Obviously, Google Books is nothing new, but because I search with it a LOT, I know that finding Robert Smithson there a month ago was a big deal (and that he wasn’t there in 2010). It means we are going to begin seeing lot of academic and art writing on the web now.

Art Observations With Jerry Magoo // http://jerrymagoo.blogspot.com/
Written by Sam Pulitzer, Mathieu Malouf, and anonymous other contributors, this blog offers commentary on noise and metal music, contemporary art, and films, as well as helpful advice about how to flirt at holiday parties, which has proved to be really effective so far this season. It also scares the hell out of me.

I’m surprised no one thought to include any of Hennessy Youngman’s videos in this list. They were surely among the most liked & re-posted videos of the last year.

Hey Paddy, Why is this list split across six pages?

Because I looked at the amount of scrolling people were going to have to do and it became clear that it would be easier to click through the post than scroll indefinitely.
