Massive Links: Artist Tries to Sell US Pavilion to Pay US Debt | Register for Northside Open Studios | The Whitney Breaks Some Ground

Jessica Labatte, "Imitators", 2010, archival inkjet print, 24 x 20 inches. One of many artists featured in Humble Art Foundation's Collector's Guide to New Art Photography V. II

  • Artist and Real Estate agent LG Williams is attempting to sell the US Pavilion in Venice to Pay U.S. debt. The art work has a number of hurdles to clear to get anywhere, namely getting the building’s owners, The Guggenheim, on board.  So far no one will talk to him. Past this, the building’s only going for just under 17 mil. The country’s total debt is 14.32 Trillion.
  • Online emerging photography hub Humble Arts Foundation is now a 501-c3. They are looking to raise money for operational expenses on a micro-funding level: If 7,500 people from their mailing list donate $12 bucks a piece, they’ll reach their $90,000 goal. Donate here. Also available is their latest edition of  The Collector’s Guide to New Art Photography. It’s styled more like an textbook than it is a catalogue, though it’s function is basically that of a phone book. It’s a bunch of selected photographs by artists with the contact information of either the artist or the gallery. I’ve already passed the book on to photography collectors I know. I think it’s worth owning.
  • I can’t believe The Whitney would betray me like this, and break ground for their new building while I’m away in Portugal! Slated to open in 2015, news broke recently that the Met will take over their space. The New York Times offers up a slide show on the grand event. Wall Street Journal writes a few words. Curbed reminds readers that The Whitney’s plans have been disapproved by city and the needed zoning changes are still pending. Fair enough, but Mayor Bloomberg attended the ceremony; this isn’t a long term problem.
  • Calling all artists with studios in Williamsburg or Greenpoint: Register for the Northside Open Studios, now extended through May 27th. The festival itself, run by The L Magazine, will take place June 15-19th. Do not miss it.

Love this idea! “American Artist and Real Estate agent LG Williams is attempting to sell the US Pavilion in Venice to Pay U.S. debt.”  I hope it works!
