Notes on MonoDramas At The New York City Opera

"Neither", Music by Morton Feldman. Text by Samuel Beckett. Performed by Cyndia Sieden

Set designer Michael Count gives the impression he’s been deeply influenced by Macy display windows. This sounds like a slight but I actually like this. Everyone on stage looks like a mannequin and is arranged as such, and of course the stage itself has similar dimensions to window displays. The program notes cite “laser pioneer” Hiro Yamagata’s NGC6093 as the source inspiration, which also works.

I think this series is more or less failed. Personally, I love Feldman and his opera set was pretty nice so it was good. But the other two was disappointed ,literally. Specially, though I do love John zorn, his opera was not good!!! at all.

just so you all know–opera singers are never mic’d. that is their voice, and their voice only.
