Damien Hirst faces eight new claims of plagiarism | Art and design | The Guardian – Granted there is a lot of similarity between John LeKay's work and Hirst's but isn't the replication of these ideas just one more indication that the core concept isn't that sophisticated to begin with? I don't see an issue with the so called plagiarism of Precious' butterfly work at all as the treatment of the butterflies and the patterning is different.

You “don’t see an issue with the so called plagiarism of Precious’ butterfly work”. She had to give up doing that work altogether for the simple reason that if she exhibited it, she would be accused of copying Hirst. If it works that way round, it works the other way round. Same with LeKay. Same with the others. It’s not a question of ““I was gonna do that idea but I didn’t” The point is that other people did do the ideas and have not received due recognition for them. This is nothing to do with just credit. It’s totally down to Hirst’s media power to manipulate perceptions, suppress art history, and bask in an achievement which is not his.

Oh for God’s sake. I take issue with Damien Hirst legally pursuing those who “steal” his own ideas, but this story is just a cry for attention. In both cases the artists crying foul should move on to ideas a little more gripping.
Also, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the best of Hirst’s Butterfly paintings put those mentioned to shame. Mind you they were probably wholly executed by assistants, but whatever.
Also also, if John LeKay is the John LeKay behind Heyoka Magazine, I don’t think he’s worth taking that seriously.
