The AFC Work of Art Supplementary Program Guide

by Art Fag City on June 8, 2010 · 86 comments Events

Who’s excited about the premiere of Bravo’s newest reality show Work of Art? The contest pits 15 artists against one another for a prize of $100,000 and a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum. It airs tomorrow at 11, and here at AFC we can’t wait!

Naturally we’ve been doing a bit of research on the contestants, and have found Bravo’s art bios aren’t answering all our questions. What is the pre-existing art world credibility of their contestants? How good is their art? How will their personalities effect the show? We can only speculate on the latter, but we’ve put together our own custom biographies evaluating each contestants “cred” by providing work evaluations, career highlights, character assessments, and of course typecast names. Click on the images below for each contestant’s write up!

Miles Mendenhall – Token OCD Guy Judith Braun – The Sage Ryan Shultz – Hipster Lifestyle Artist
Mark Velasquez – Mr. Creepy Nice Guy Nao Bustamante – The Provocateur Erik Johnson – The Untrained Artist
Jaime Lynn Henderson – The Boyfriend Obsessed Christian Peregrine Honig – The New Age Consumer Trong Nguyen – The Robot
Jaclyn Santos – Post Feminist Wanna-be John Parot – Token Gay Guy Amanda Williams – The Professor
Abdi Farah – The Christian Nicole Nadeau – The Girl Who Starts Random Dance Parties at Bars

Didn’t you call me “rough” not too long ago in regards to gang WANGA? The subtext of at least half of your editorialized bios are that they should throw themselves off of cliffs (or in front of trucks)! Metaphorically, of course.

Is it legal to set up a betting pool/AFC fundraiser?

If so, $2 on Nao to win, place or show.

Technically I only wrote 7 of the bios, interns Liza Eliano and Michelle Halabura wrote the others, and while I edited everything, I can’t take credit for their opinions (right as I think they are).

Anyway, technically I only find Mark deeply troubling.

@ben That is brilliant! It may well be illegal, but I like it anyway.

Oh, “deeply troubling” is tremendously generous. He seems more a David LaChapelle wannabe who wants to shoot actual porn but can only make generic Vice-magazine-esque “misogyny” photos, all with the same numbing “high-quality” finish. His creepy cheerfulness is just your average fake-y “professionalism” covering up some fairly transparent self-loathing and general anger-at-the-world.

Off the cliff. Metaphorically.

Reality television’s sole purpose is to inspire schadenfreude.

I have no idea if this service is reputable or not….but might be the way to go. You just have to decide what percentage goes to the house. Think about it….this could mean DAYS of lunch money for your interns.

The first link is childish (like, “it’s a color test but I wanna tap ‘dat ass, bro!”), which is just your run-of-the-mill lame machismo (and a dumb way of reminding any of his viewers who might think that being an artist is “gay” that he, in fact, isn’t). Being a total sexpot himself, he seems to find it necessary to constantly remind us how of into-the-ladies he is.

From what I can tell, the second link is just him re-posting someone’s outrage at outraging statistics regarding rape, which I take to mean that he, too, finds these statistics outrageous. So, that one’s just really tautological. Actually, BOTH links are tautological. I guess that toothless, amateurish, “exploitative” photos of buxom women is shocking now.

Congratulations to Peregrine! Those of us that knew her in KC know that she’s been waiting all her life to be a television star. This is going to be BIG for her—think of the celebrity endorsements she can do for Dick Blick! You go, girl!

But for us tv-less (and our slightly better-off cable-less friends), where can one find a public viewing of this trainwreck tomorrow?

Well I am enjoying this tremendously. Letting you guys say some of what I bite my tongue on. But…As I said in previous threads I vouch only for myself. So in that regard…1) My website is NOT geared towards promoting this show, as I think was said somewhere. 2) It may not be iconic show like Bad Girls, but since my “re-entry” I do not sneeze at solo show at Galerie Conrads, or Paper Exhibition curated by Raimundas Malasauskas, or solo show at Fruit and Flower Deli, NY, or SOS 4.8 curated by Jota Castro in Spain, and just returned from installing at DUVE Berlin. And I will also (as humbly as possible) add that I just had a studio visit with Carolyn Cristov-Bakargiev, the curator for upcoming Documenta 13. OK??? So I think my credibility is doing pretty darn well….Thanks for the opportunity to tune it up! Judith

i ( sadly ) don't believe that with the art world the way it is , these guys , good artists or not , will have a good reception in the future .

but .. hey ! can you blame an artist that is just trying to show its work in a market where any door never gets opened ?

let then try in peace .

what really scares me is the idea of a contest like this . transforming art production in a freak show for the masses .

but all artists , in one way or other , have to pass by process of selections to have their works aproved . this is just one more . and one more time , as always , it is going to be ridiculous and unfair .

After viewing tonight’s episode, I can assure everyone that it will provide much-needed comic relief for the art world—and if you can’t figure out who’s the first to get bum-rushed off the island in say, two minutes, I heartily recommend a trip to Lenscrafters. Also, found this YouTube of the babelicious, if post-feminist, Ms Santos endorsing her dentist. As they say, let a smile be your umbrella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryOD9zCNut0

Get excited for episode 2 tonight at 10 EST! The drama WILL begin to unfold. I can say that, after seeing myself reduced to about three pitiful soundbites last episode, my HOPE is that the editing will begin to showcase the many thoughtful conversations we had amongst each other both with the judges and with each other. This show will be a blast to watch as long as all of you remember first and foremost: it is a REALITY TV SHOW first…an art-ish show second. It is extremely edited to tell specific, easy-to-digest, cookie-cutter stories about each of us. Of course we all KNOW that…but we often forget what a miniscule snippet we’re seeing about a contestant. For a full length of my reaction to Episode 1, please visit http://jaimelynnhenderson.com/#/blog/4541630472. Have fun tonight! Remember, it starts at 10 instead of 11!
