Film Screening and Discussion
I can hardly wait for John Powers‘ screening for Star Wars and Modernism: An Artist Commentary next Thursday May 20th. Having had the luxury of previewing the first few episodes as well as the introduction embedded above I have an inkling of what viewers are in for and it’s intense. Pairing video and film stills with historical archives Powers posits that Star Wars can be understood in terms of the art, architecture, and politics of Cold-War America. We’re talking 14 episodes of the most in depth discussion of the film as it relates to larger American culture.
The project is in-process so not all the episodes are complete. Of course, since viewing three next week will top out at 45 minutes, it’s not like we’d be seeing too many more at the screening anyway.
The event will be followed with a talk by artist John Powers, the film’s composer, Luke DuBois, and Colby Chamberlain, Senior Editor at Triple Canopy, and publisher, of the Powers’ essay sparking the larger project. The screening has my highest “must-see” recommendation.
