I tweeted this John Wesley from the Fredericks Freiser opening two weeks ago, but it pleased me enough that I asked the gallery to send me a better quality shot for the blog. It’s hard to explain the exact quality that makes this painting so exquisite, but part of it might simply be that this Rocky Mountain gym teacher has a vagina mountain growing out of her head. I also like her pole. I’m not sure what sport uses the prop, but then again most don’t require naked competitors or team mates either. Whatever the case, it’s probably not important.

I saw this painting there, too. I think she’s a pole vaulter.

Personally I think she’s leaning against the rail on the high dive platform and meditating before removing her glasses and doing an inward 3 1/2 in the pike position with a double twist, but that’s just me thinkin’ out loud.

To hell with the pole. Her head is that of a gym teacher but her body contradicts an athletic look. . Her over sized breasts and heavy bottom should be replaced with more chiseled arms and a leaner body. That, or rename the piece…”Rocky Mountan Yuppy”?

Whether she is pole vaulting, or getting ready for a dive, I like the the artist’s choices in representing her features. The eyelashes, lips, nipples, etc are all varied in comparison to its counterpart; one nipple is a bit larger than the other, etc. This effect makes this gym teacher a bit more human.
As for the choice of her figure with “over sized breasts and heavy bottom” is actually highlighting the feminity in what may usually be perceived as masculine. I feel this is to show a different perspective of a female gym teacher, which is generally perceived as a masculine role, from the Rocky Mountains, again a more rugged perception, as a nicely shaped feminine form. Altogether this shows what one regularly perceives as typically masculine in a very feminine representation, hence the vagina mountains and hourglass figure.
It is a lovely piece.

Honestly, though, aren’t gym teachers not usually in the best of shape? Mine never were. She doesn’t look fat and balding, at least.
