Thanks to the New Museum’s Chief Curator Richard Flood for finally providing the art world with our own “the internet is a series of tubes” type comment. As reported by Hyperallergic’s Lisa Radon, Flood claims he only learned about blogs three months ago when various ethical conflicts at the Museum were being discussed about Skin Fruit (now on display). He proceeds to describe blogs like prairie dogs that sense movement, but aren’t communicating with each other.
I’m not going to bother discussing these thoughts — they’re too stupid. I do however sense a prairie dog meme coming on! Thx M.River!

Besides being stuck in 1993, Flood is metaphor-challenged. Per Wikipedia prairie dogs (i)are social animals, (iii) employ a complex form of communication that involves barks and rhythmic chirps (iii) use their dichromatic color vision to detect predators from a far distance and then alert other prairie dogs to the danger with a special, high-pitched call. Con Slobodchikoff and others assert that prairie dogs use a sophisticated system of vocal communication to describe specific predators. Prairie dogs also trim the vegetation around their colonies, perhaps to remove any cover for predators. Their burrows generally contain several routes of escape.
I strenuously object to Richard Flood comparing Jerry’s activities on Facebook to Benito Mussolini. Everyone knows it’s more David Koresh or Jim Jones!

The New Museum is fine but it does seem to have growing pains. My guess is that it will take a few more years to get use to its new size and scope. In the meantime, raise them like you want to keep them.
And for Mr. Flood – the man is smart and knows art. So, let all of us Prairie Dogs dance and enjoy the LOLz but let us also remember to invite him and smart folks like him down into the interconnected warren for a look around. He just might be into what he sees. Who knows? He just might start digging networked tunnel of his own.

This is hilarious. It’s the perfect backlash from the blog discussion of Skin Fruit. It’s like the fruit was there on the table, and then he just gave us the chocolate fountain to dip it into. My day is so much better knowing that ignorance continues to provide the utmost hilarity.
I am not sure the Steven Hawkings voice helps…
but I’m sure the chocolate fountain visual does.

Yeah, I provide the full quote in the youtube description, but I think it would have been better a little less Steven Hawking-y and with subtitles. I suppose I could redo it, but I’m no imovie expert so this took more time than I’d like to admit.
