There's only a few clusters of galleries. There's a leftover hippie "vibe" (if I can use that term) that rewards people for expression. So there's a glut of student level work. I lived there for 3 years- in between living in NY- and I was shocked to see the two main schools of work. One is pretty pretty paintings of a certain style and the other is social justice motivated work. I'm not against either, but there wasn't much in between. In SF, the culture is really more interested in tech, entrepreneurship, and social justice than art. People leave the SF art scene because it is sleepy!
