What opportunities come from participating in a giant uncurated 24-hour exhibition? Probably not a lot past light networking, but that’s not the point. Shows such as BYOA, The X-Initiative’s closing exhibition for their one year non-profit program, are about building community. I saw a lot of that at Tuesday’s closing, which is great considering I’d expected a shit-show with a few good bands. I’m pleased to report that with the exception of one lost sculpted penis, the event seemed exceptionally good willed. The professionals in attendance were friendly and sociable, and generally quite giving with their time and energy. A testament to this is the following BLNK essay generously donated to the blog by photographer Conrad Ventur. Photos after the jump.

*We’re short on captioning information for a lot of the work in this essay. If you know the artists work in this essay let us know in the comments.

besides the music, this might have been the worst thing i’ve witnessed in 10 years in this city. why is Saltz holding court? and what about the pretentious image for the show? whoa.

The “Free Contact (Anonymous affection)” by Jin-kang Park is strikingly similar to a piece by Keetra Dean Dixon called “Anonymous Hugging” created a year or more ago.

After seeing Nicool’s comment about my work (Free-contact), I need to say that I have been working on the concept of this work since 2005, starting with my project “Free-handshake”. “Free-contact” was first exhibited in March 2008. Just to clarify..
