Rob Pruitt’s Art Awards at The Guggenheim can step aside: The World Canvas Awards have been announced… to non-profit slide registry artists who presumably have their email addresses available for scraping. The art spam claims its 31 categories give artists an opportunity to be recognized by the biggest names in the industry, though of course, it’s entirely unclear why media diversity should make a stronger contest. As far as we can tell, third-rate street artists will find the greatest favor. After all, the esteemed panel consists Jennifer McCormick, “the very soul” of The Helium Foundation (which shows Banksy), Jen Murby of Andipa Gallery, a commercial exhibition space specializing primarily in the secondary market (and Banksy), and Chris Garlick of Signal Gallery, a program focusing on street art (that doesn’t show Banksy). The lucky winning artist will have paid $35 bucks to enter, but will go home with a trophy, $1,000 dollars, and a spread in Arty Arty Magazine.
