Tonight, Marc Jancou opens the first solo show of Jacques Louis Vidal, an artist who first hit our radar at “Dangling Between the Real Thing and The Sign in the Window,” a show curated by James Wagner and Barry Hoggard at Dam, Stuhltrager in 2006. Since then, Vidal has attended Yale for sculpture and exhibited at Curator’s Office and Sunday LES. We’re not sure what to expect, but Wagner describes his work thusly: “Vidal’s performances and sculptures evoke traditional folk-tale forms and, well, a lot of slacker high school shop, but his subject appears to be a contemporary and grown-up concern with the absurdity of a world created by the rude political, commercial and religious heirs to that more humble and more muted America and its naive how-to culture”. Sounds good to us.

Elsewhere in the city, Jerry Saltz will be signing his new book Seeing Out Louder at the X-Initiative tonight (6-8). Saltz is an extremely generous personality both in print and in person, so we recommend stopping by. We’ve had a lot going on at the AFC Headquarters these days so we haven’t yet read the book, but that will change shortly.
