No offense to gallerist and entrepreneur Jen Bekman, but I don’t want her lecture on why I shouldn’t be afraid to buy art in Chelsea as my ringtone. There are a number of reasons for this, but the only one that matters is effectiveness: What are the chances Ms. Bekman’s lecture will cut through the noise of a party? Would people hear the ring on the street? If a phone owner accidentally leaves their cell on in a meeting and it rings, will people mistake the tone for fucking off at the computer? I’m quite sure Bekman has no control over the number of bad ideas her work seems to inspire on the web (I’m not even going to get into the number of icky “art” edition websites out there), but this recent permutation makes one point clear: The more Internet famous you are, the more annoying forms your spam will take.
