Introducing Camp Basel: Making Art Basel Miami Work on a Budget

by Paddy Johnson on October 27, 2009 · 6 comments Events

UPDATE: CAMP BASEL WAS NOT CONSIDERED ART BY THE CITY AND WAS SHUT DOWN. OFFER NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

The Upper Eastside Gardens invites Art Basel Miami fair-goers to camp out during December’s art hoo-haw, luring them with promises of free WiFi, mini-golf, and 6 giant oak trees! For 18 to 25 bucks a night, we’re suitably intrigued; there are even a few site cabins available for an extra five a night that we’ve got our eye on. We should mention however, that those seeking the luxuries of South Beach hotels at unheard of prices will not find them here (or anywhere else in Miami during the first week of December). We’re talking outdoor showers, a walk up the road to use their pool at Motel Blu, and street parking (hello car rental!). Sure, you’re slumming it, but this might be exactly the kind of deal those on an emerging artist’s budget need.

I’m told the registration packet will have coupons to restaurants throughout the neighborhood as well.

I do not understand why “emerging”artists, or “artists” would want to go to Art Basel. The fair and all its suck-up satellite fairs are designed to sell art to the bored monied types. Its a bit like cows wanting to visit the slaughterhouse. I propose an anti-artbasel fair, a gathering of artists and creators at some free place with warm weather, a place for artists to meet each other and make stuff without all the games and competition.

Doesn’t what your talking about already exist with The Station…or say the Core artist residency in Texas?
