Much to the chagrin of c-monster, who last week called for a moratorium on all fall previews over Twitter, Art Fag City presents the go-see list to end all lists! Unlike past collaborative efforts between Editor-in-chief Paddy Johnson and Associate Editor Karen Archey, the name of the author has been included beside each pick. All choices were agreed upon by the editors though some represent the unique taste of either author. This installment of our Fall Preview includes only gallery exhibitions, paying careful attention to the Lower East Side and that of emerging artists. We have no idea what to expect from this show, but we're guessing it's less video and mirrors (displayed in 2008 at The Whitney), and more destruction of innocence through sodomy, incest, blood and other bodily fluids. We haven't always been fans of the latter, but we remain eternally hopeful that we'll eventually be taken in by whatever excrement McCarthy throws at us.

Dasha Shishkin, “Men Like That,” Zach Feuer September 11 – October 17 – Paddy Johnson
Painter Dasha Shishkin not only graced our top 33 Emerging Artist List earlier this year, but was one of our suggestions for the White House art collection. We like her heavily patterned update on Toulouse-Lautrec. Rumored to have been completed earlier this summer, Shishkin's first solo show at Zach Feuer is not to be missed.

Hans-Peter Feldmann “Schattenspiel” 303 Gallery, September 12 — October 17 – Karen Archey
Maintaining a heavy presence in this Summer's European fairs, German artist Hans-Peter Feldmann will show Schattenspiel—also currently on view within the Venice Biennial—at 303 Gallery. Schattenspiel, literally meaning “shadow play,” combines commonplace objects found by the artist, placed upon small rotating plinths. Light focused on the rotating objects creates a dramatic, if not creepy, shadow against gallery walls. Feldmann will also present “Bookshelves,” a photographic representation of the artist's own unit in his Düsseldorf home.

Josiah McElheny, “Proposals for a Chromatic Modernism”, Andrea Rosen, September 12 – October 17, 2009 – Karen Archey
One of the few artists in the contemporary art world successfully incorporating hand blown glass into his work, Josiah McElheny reflects upon 20th century Modernist idealism and its aesthetics. The artist continues this practice in his second solo exhibition at Andrea Rosen Gallery, titled Proposals for a Chromatic Modernism. McElheny's piece de resistance comprises an enlarged maquette of a Mies van der Rohe skyscraper altered to incorporate stylistic qualities of the architect's rival, Bruno Taut.

What exactly is Bernadette Corporation? We're not entirely sure–beyond the partial anonymity of the groups member's, (including John Kelsey, Emily Sundblad, Bernadette van Huy, Antek Walzcak, etc.) Bernadette Corporation's forays venture into various mediums, often denying personal authorship. Their novel Reena Spaulings, now the title of an affiliated Lower East Side gallery inhabiting a previous Chinese brothel, follows the fictional young female character living an almost chiche New York art world life. She's a docent at the Met, an underwear model, does too much coke and gets in cat fights. Such narratives knowingly capitalize on art world fictions obsessed with youth, sexuality and excess.

As fans of both Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery's programming and assemblage sculptor Jessica Stockholder we figure there's a lot to look forward to about this show. There's some chance the work might look too similar for its own good, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Can curiosity kill the artcat? We're not entirely sure what to make of 2005 Turner Prize recipient Simon Starling's oeuvre. Although it's sometimes ugly and borderline arcane, the British artist's work provokes continually provokes our curiosity due to its intellectual rigor and complexity.

Melanie Schiff, an LA-based photographer previously represented by the now-defunct Cohan and Leslie, will show for the first time this October at Horton & Liu. (previously Sunday Gallery). As Schiff was included in our Top 33 Emerging artists list last May, we look forward to her new and always beautiful body of work.

Last Spring, Cheim and Read displayed a number of secular light sculptures that caught our attention at Art Basel. In all likelihood they won't be in this show, as it's titled “Abstracts”, but we're nonetheless looking forward to seeing the work.

Time to see what K8 Hardy is up to. Rather than re-hash what VBS has already done brilliantly, we invite you to watch their interview with K8 Hardy. They provide a great overview of her work, which as she explains, is difficult to describe in terms of medium. We'll go with multimedia artist for lack of a better word.

Speaking of artists who make work in virtually every known medium, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge marks one of our most anticipated shows of the year. To quote Radar, he's the man who “invented the genre known as industrial music and later helped pioneer acid house and the rave scene, all the while crafting an unsettling persona—shamanistic, sinister, and unabashedly deviant—that would inspire countless acts.” He's also the front man for Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle and a pioneering sculptor works with maggots. Yes, that's right, Damien Hirst did it second.

Given that we're longtime fans of Canada's programming and they're mounting an awesomely titled group show combining both disparate-but-good artists Agathe Snow, purveyor of artsy foodstuffs; and Chris Martin, abstract painter, we're curious to see what the gallery has in store.

How does an artist navigate the professional art world? Seeking to fill a void the foundation sees in current MFA programs, this artist collective intends to provide a historical account of art market development in tandem to the canonical narrative already taught in schools.
