Let’s Fire Up the Rumor Mill! Bravo Casting Calls for Untitled Art Project

We’ve received a couple reports about casting calls for Bravo’s Untitled Art Project, and they aren’t good.  Not that it comes as a surprise that show business seeks out contentious, conventionally attractive people, but rumor has it that execs at Magical Elves casting company are interested in fire-starting, camera darling hipsters rather than actual artistic talent.

We have no idea how much credence to give these reports, but as a potential help to the casters at Magical Elves, AFC headquarters came up with the perfect contestant for Untitled Art Project: the future love child of contemporary art tycoon Damien Hirst and their own charming Sarah Jessica Parker. We guess the baby would have to grow up impossibly fast to make the casting call, but we assume Magical Elves can help with that.

Share your thoughts and rumors with us via our comments section or by email at tips@artfagcity.com. Check here for upcoming casting dates.

Now I’m not neccesarily what you would call a ‘fine’ artist (unless you count being fine as part of the process-LOL) but I do know how to make a good latch hook rug for holiday gifts and such. Where they casting at?

I went to the casting in LA. There were a few artists there who received invites to the casting, and they were all in a similar art genre, pop surrealist. Casting breezed through the portfolios, like they were looking for a particular TYPE of art for the show. Most at the audition were sent home after that. Very few made it to the interview stage.

I agree with he write up in regards to it being a hipster show – I read the application – with in the first five questions it asks your name, contact info and if you currently have a boyfriend or girlfriend – not, are you single or married? I thought that was weird AND a red flag….I’m married so I figured I’m already out.

I was at the casting call in LA and was gentally rejected, however; I wonder what they will do with the collection of digital files from each artist. Those files are a magnificant repository of the art community of So. Cal., containing the heart and soul, mind and vision of the brightest creative individuals on earth along with all the other cities involved. It would be great if something positive could happen or be established to benefit us all. Access to it could mean value beyond our imagination.

I’m awfully camera friendly, but the paintings are always stealing my hair-thunder.
Dinks.
And they always make folks get up at ungodly hours on those shows.
I pass, but will accept winning as a write-in.

This is just about the worst idea in television. I think someone along the way had their heart in the right place, but this isn’t the right way of exploring the arts on TV. How do you quantify painting with sculpture, or sculpture with photography, or industrial design with any of these? It’s a tall order, and I’m pretty certain, it can’t be done in even the best condition, let alone on a Bravo TV show. This show CAN NOT work as stated. Any artist worth a second look would never go on a show like this just because you would need to compromise your work so much for a show like this. How do you create “challenges” that you can measure in an artistic setting?? Art isn’t about “challenges” in that sense of the word. Truthfully I don’t know how to explain what good art is, you just know it when you see it, there is no way of systematically quantifying it. It’s kind of like grades in art class, you know all of the A’s in the class aren’t equal. Do you pick the winner to be the best painter or the guy or girl that is above average in everything, but not exceptional at any one thing? It would be interesting to just follow a gallery’s roster of artists from the initial idea to the show opening, but that would be to “boring” for TV watching. Watching people by themselves in their studio for 40+ hours a week is just not TV friendly for the viewing public. They will infuse drama and cast it with hipsters and it will be a catty mess. The show itself is going to be a better comment on culture than any “art” produced on it.

Live bloggin’ from miami at 99 degrees. The cattle call is as swampy as it gets here. With bottled water and portfolios one by one prospective dreamers from across the nation are processed through the humiliation machine. the judges are, in the most part, miami mavens so it is hard for local artists to get an unbiased scrutiny. Better humiliated now than later on TV…

A sweltering affair… the reality seems dreadfully scripted.

What will bravo do with the archive? Are the terms void if artist is rejected?

Reading the application’s legal agreement the applicants are giving Bravo a lot of power: copyright of images submitted in the application (whether or not one is cast) and the right to perform background checks secretly that can be used on the show. Whatever one thinks of art and artists appearing in a game show context the applicants are already waiving rights. And no Swampy, the copyright waiver seems to be permanent.

Also, what professional in the contemporary art world would want to take part as expert or judge? TV exposure can move jeans or fill restaurants, but can it sell museum memberships or move $30,000 paintings? One would think association with reality TV would damage a reputation. Or maybe I am being old fashioned.

As much as I naively wanted this to be an awesome experience, I’ve decided not to audition (not that anyone cares.) It would have meant taking time away from preparing for my own solo show, driving hundreds of miles, schlepping a bunch of art all over the place, putting a lot of stress on my family, and ultimately being told I’m too old or too married or too representational. And then even if I did get on, I have this terrible feeling that it would somehow really mess up my life. Forget it. I’ll watch and laugh along with the rest of America instead. I hate to pass up opportunities but this one doesn’t feel right…

Maybe the reason no one is posting about the castings is the right to discuss the audition process is also signed away in the application.

I went to the LA Casting on Sunday. It was a long wait, over three hours to go through the whole process. Based on the numbers on our name tags, I’m guessing there was a little over 500 people that day. Felt bad for the poor SOB’s who were lugging thier 5′ x 5′ canvas’s the entire time. Mixed crowd, but definitly on the young side. And not as many hipsters or Burning Man vets as I expected. The people running it were all very cool and you could tell they were running on fumes by that point. Once we finally got to sit with someone to review our portfolio, we literaly had five minutes. The girl I met genuinly seemed to like the work sample I had brought, but then plowed through my portfolio as if the clock was ticking. I definitly got the sense she wasn’t so much interested in the quality of the work so much as wether or not it fit a specific set of criterias. The few (not me, I was cut) that were asked to stay got to go in another room where apparently three judges were sitting and you were given a proper ten minute interview. How many got to go on, I have no idea. Kind of a wasted day, but no pain, no gain.

Judging by the people doing the final judging/interviews in New York this show will be very serious and hopefully very much a success.

I went to the audition today, And was totally confused. I mean I’m an amazing artist, and I say that only because it means little to me, i have more important things in my life. I have years of experience in any art form you can name, and to top it off i do huge murals in mere weeks. I went to the audition today, got to the second cut, the interview, and had the judges laughing. then all of a sudden the only guy that actually saw my work and talked said “sorry you arent what we are looking for”. I was shocked. I’m articulate, educated, young, tall, funny and beautiful. I honestly dont mean to brag i just want to make it clear that they are looking for something very strange. I had award winning pieces there in every type of media, painting, sculpture, photo and prints and they still said no!

I was shocked. I’m articulate, educated, young, tall, funny and beautiful. I honestly dont mean to brag i just want to make it clear that they are looking for something very strange. I had award winning pieces there in every type of media, painting, sculpture, photo and prints and they still said no!

I went to the audition today, And was totally confused. I mean I’m an amazing artist, and I say that only because it means little to me, i have more important things in my life. Went to NY casting call yesterday and the rumors are all true. They are casting for a tv show. This has nothing at all to do with art. The first level screeners are weeding out those without the right look. Over 30..you’re out. As far as the screeners having any art experience…highly doubtful. I showed the early 20-ish blonde girl some ink drawings and I don’t think she had any idea what she was looking at. If I had been a 24 year old androgynous waif with photos of dog crap on the sidewalk I might have made it on the show. Kind of what I expected…but…nothing ventured nothing gained.

I went to the NYC auditions. Made it to the second round, they cut about 85% of the people in the first round. During the interview inside the gallery the one Brit in the center table asked me a couple of random questions about what media I used and said “We are going to pass”. No one else on the table even looked at the portfolio! I agree with a lot of the people here they are looking for a certain type of art, probably popart. I did talk to one guy afterwards that did get “passed” by the panel, and you will never guess what his art piece was that passed him….and Im not kidding when I say this…it was a cover of People magazine glued on a piece of paper with those google-sticker eyes glued over the eyes of britney spears on the cover….seriously..that got him passed! WTF?

wow, jenny, it just amazes me that an artist so obviously amazing and award-winning and beautiful as yourself somehow didn’t make it. I think they’re just jealous of your awesome talent. talentS, sorry.

Wow, I so stand corrected. It seems like plenty of art professionals want to be on TV. Jerry Saltz, Matthew Higgs and the auctioneer from Sothebys? Are their motivations recession blues or vainglory? The funny thing about contemporary art is that it needs to remain apart from mass culture to critique it, an old idea of avante gardes for sure but pervasive. I wonder about the scheme of the show. If its about image making maybe that makes ratings in DeMoines. And sure, if there is an Iowian contestant that might help the museum. But what doesn’t seem to work, at least to me, is that contemporary art is already about a rejection of something historically. If the work is not placed in context, its going to be the gong show.

IM IN THE FINAL ROUND July 22, 2009 at 1:47 am

Hi Guys.
I am over 30. I am not particularly attractive. I am no where near the definition of a ‘hipster.’ I drew an x over the part of the contract that gives them full rights over my submitted images and told them so at check-in. I am a conceptual artist. I am a well educated, award winning, gallery represented and articulate. My work has a very political bent. I never thought they would take me and now I am in the final round. Why am I interested in doing the show? I haven’t answered this question in a way that is fully satisfying for me yet… but if the voice of my work can reach every corner of the world via a cable TV show… that’s great. I am making work to be heard… aren’t we all? I am sure the people who make it on the show will not gain the respect of the ‘art world’ for doing so, but they may gain their respect if they produce quality work that engages the contemporary art dialog and puts it in front of middle America to debate. AWESOME. Don’t hate… celebrate. And wish me luck.

“Im in the final round”… Jokes on you… A signature doesn’t even need to be legible to be legal. If you sign anything it’s legally binding.

Errr…. So if I amendend their contract so that it did not grant rights to my images, and that is the document I signed, then they still have those rights? Can you explain that logic please?

A contract is between TWO or more entities. ALL contract signers have to agree to the terms of the contract, SO if only you made alterations to the contract it is not valid in any way. If only you signed it you are responsible for all and they are NOT. Good Luck I hope you make it all the way!!!
