Thanks to Greg Allen for pointing out the fantastic two-minute clip from Daniel Martinico’s Khaan! Allen aptly contrasts this with Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s suspense-less Zidane, a big-budget biography of the French soccer player.
Probably due to recent viewing, the video reminded me that techniques used to tease out a viewer’s attention can take dramatically different forms. Last Friday, for example, I watched Joel Holmberg’s growing text “Created by Joel“, an animation set at a fixed speed, but with a surprisingly drawn-out finish. Suspense isn’t the right word to describe this piece, but certainly the same sustained movement with an anticipated end holds the viewer’s attention.
