Musician Dan Deacon’s newest album Bromst received uneven reviews in the press, though he did extremely well with Pitchfork, which seems to be all that matters these days. As it happens, that write-up was also the most thorough and well executed, so I’m inclined to think response carries more weight than just the authority of the site.

Vaguely connected to various art circles — photographer Josh Poehlein, for example, knows Ian Clark, the cinematographer of the Pitchfork documentary on Deacon. I noticed some connections between a 2006 performance posted on Poehlein’s blog and some early mp3s of artist Paul Davis. Given what I know of Davis, I can only assume his work relies more on computer generated sounds than that of Deacon; certainly, Deacon’s vocals distinguish his music. Either way, though, it sounds like Deacon was listening to Davis at some point.

as for crazed nerd-punk stomp down instrument builders, I’ve always preferred Quintron to deacon:

Quintron seems to have more art to it for sure, though I have heard the criticism that the music itself isn’t as good as the show. I was pretty happy with both though when I saw him and Miss Pussycat perform this Fall in New York.
