Tired of “Massive Links“? I only publish two in this edition, so I’ve retitled my post accordingly.

Normally I don’t post links to Microsoft sponsored events, but if it means helping a photographer win $50,000 bucks, I’ll do it! Carey Kirkella wants to photograph America’s Visionary Changemakers, a project documenting contemporary pioneers molding the American business model to reflect our values. Art professionals fall under the hood of innovators that will be photographed, so I’m all for it. Vote for her here, so she can win a little cash. [Kirkella’s image above]

Editors note: Kirkella has a personal connection to this blog, which may indicate some editorial bias.

In performance art news, Jennifer Jacobs spent a couple of hours posing as a guard at MoMA the other day. Wearing a red tie, the most defining feature of their uniform, a black pant suit, and a fake ID she had few problems fitting in. On this subject Jacobs observes, “I was surprised how well it worked just to act like I belonged there.” Link tip via: Steve Lambert

I’m sorry, but the Carey Kirkella thing? Come on, AFC. No doubt Ms. Kirkella will track down Wonerful Human Beings for her subjects, but vanity portraits of businesspeople by a photographer hoping to win 50k CASH from Microsoft? Um, will we get to see a humanizing photo of a Microsoft exec, you know, as part of the deal? Can we imagine a likelier artist-as-tool project?

Nothing personal, you know I love ya, but this I gotta call out.

Jesus I hope not. I this isn’t a vanity project — I happen to know the photographer, and she is struggling — but I understand why you’re calling this out. I almost didn’t post it myself. But when you know the person, it’s a little more difficult to say you don’t want to help them, even though you can.

I can promise you this project won’t be including any portraits of microsoft execs. I’m a fine art photographer hoping to get some help to make a fine art project where the goal is to help inspire others to “be the change they wish to see in the world.”-Gandhi
Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi voted for this idea, and I hope after taking a look at my project statement and my website- http://www.careykirkella.com, especially
compared to some of the others, you’ll consider voting for it too.

Well I feel a little bit like a jerk… but only a little. What to do when confronted with a professional-realm decision about the work of a personal connection? (That rhetorical question is not meant to imply any judgment (good or bad) on AFC’s part re: Carey Kirkella’s work). Sadly, I don’t often have professional decisions to make, but even in critiques with friends it’s tricky.

The larger problems stand, though; good luck in the competition, but I question the project on its merits.

50 G’s ARE a lot of G’s, though

Nobody is critiquing the project here though: we’re just trying to get the photographer a little cash. I’m going to say that’s okay.
