“The piece is about his life really”, says dealer Asher Edelman to CNN’s Richard Roth recently in a short clip about the economy, “He doesn’t have any money, so he has to buy the brushes to make this at the dollar store. And it’s quite fun, this piece.” In mixed blessings, while the artist’s name is never mentioned in the video clip, it might be for the better anyway, since I’d loath to be the artist who had a free standing ham sandwich head described as representative of my life.
The whole segment though is about that bizarre. “The market is a scary place to be” narrates Roth, all the while accompanied by CNN’s choice footage of ghost paintings. Meanwhile Edelman proves to be the rare dealer willing to speculate upon his own gallery’s demise, a pondering most professionals in the business make privately but aren’t likely to broadcast for fear of scaring collectors.

Edelman Fine Arts, New York, Screengrab AFC
Asher Edelman problems just seem to expand from CNN’s stangely edited story. The news outlet never names the dealer’s gallery Edelman Art, so collectors googling the dealer may find some rather misleading results. For example the first result brought back with the term “Edelman Fine Art” is Edelman Fine Arts, a New York gallery that has bizarrely replaced what should be an artist list with a link to the local weather. Coincidentally, should readers visit Edelman Art, the hamburger head artist profiled on CNN is also not on their website.
